The British Consul, Mr Pelly haa lodged a protest w’ith the lederal Court over the action of the United States coastguard in firing on the freight steamer Chief Capilano, of Vancouver, and the seizure of the ship in Canadian waters to -satisfy a suit brought, by the insurers of a cargo which was lost in another vessel owned by the same company. As w.as stated in yesterday’s cable news the United States coastguard seixed the steamer Chief Capilona whilst in the Strait of Juan at Filed. The seizure was made in connection with a claim for £4OOO on the cargo against the owners by a firm in Portland, Oregon, which arose from the sinking of -the steamer Chief LMaquitla near the Aleutian Islands in December, 1925. The seizure was made on the strength of a claim by an export Ann tor r.’iOflO through loss of cargo in the sinking of the sister ship Chief Maquiila, which Ihe firm attributed to the vessel’s unscaworthiness. •\fler tiic sinking an investigation at. Hongkong resulted in a decision exonerating the captain and crew foi the loss of 'ihe vessel. The owners declaring that international law has been violated in the seizure of the vessel whilst proceeding from a British port to a foreign country have protested to the Dominion Government.
