CAMBRIDGE SOCIETY.

PLUNKET AND REST ROOM OFFICIAL OPENING. A large number of Cambridge and district residents assembled at lhe Plunkct and rest rooms on Thursday afternoon to witness lhe official opening of the building. The building which stands on the west side of Victoria Street below lhe Post Office is picturesque with rough cast walls and red liled roof. The interior is well finished and thoroughly up to date. The money for the building was raised by means of a Queen Carnival and it stands free of debt. w Mr .T. S. Fisher, chairman or the building committee, who handed over the key of the Plunkct room to Mrs T. F. Richards (President of the local Plunket Society and the key of the rest, room to the Mayor (Mr C. 11. Priestley) congratulated the people of Cambridge on their attaining such a splendid building free of debt, lie also paid a tribute, lo lhe line work done by | Mr E- Vcalc in organising the carnival | and lhanked lhe committee who had ! worked with him in bringing the building lo a- completion. .Mrs Richards, in taking lhe key of lhe Plunket room said that she felt proud that af. last their ambitions had been realised, and they had now a home of their own after many ups I ami downs. [ yip f. Lye, M.P., who made the official opening read a telegram from the Minister of Health, (Hon. A. JStallworthy), who expressed his best wishes for lhe success of the Society. ; [Mr Lye said tie was sure that the completion of flic building was a matter of general satisfaction to the

whole district. The Cambridge branch of tlie Plunket Society had been in existence for twelve years, during which time they had been moved about from building to building. The society had struggled along bravely with very liille finance, and although the Government subsidised the nurse’s salary, there was no subsidy for the Society itself. Mr Lye referred lo the great work of . Dr. Truby King which had attracted world-wide attention. infant mortality had been greatly reduced during the last. 10 years and lie I houghl surely a considerable amount of. credit was due to the Plunket Society. Mr Lyc then declared the Plunket Rooms open. The Mayor who accepted the key of the rest room on trust for the people, said the council would take a pride in looking after it. They had a scheme of beautifying the grounds which would make it in keeping with tlic beautiful building- He then declared ttic rest room open. Afternoon lea was served at the Town Halt bv Hie ladies’ committee.
