NOTES AND COMMENTS

BAY OF PLENTY MEETING. SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE AHEAD. (By "Martian." The Bay of Plenty 'Club, which will cold its annual meeting at 'fauranga on Saturday, is assured of the most successful gathering in Hie history of this East Coast racing institution. The fields which have met the acceptance in the various events are easily a record for the Club and although there is likely to be several defections they will still be of liberal size. Chief interest will centre in the Tauranga Cup, fhe mile and a quarter open event of the card, while another leading attraction will be the Hemes’ Memorial Hack Cup Handicap, ol" one mile. A special train will leave Fran'kton for Tauranga on Saturday, at 6.10 a.m.

A southern writer has the following to say concerning a former Te p.npn trained jumper:—“The connections of Gala Day (10.9) cannot complain of the weight received by their representative in the Autumn Hurdles (lAm) at the Oamaru J-C.’s Autumn meting.” Tliis race will he decided on Saturday.

Tambourine, who figures in the Trial Plate and the President's Hack Handicap at Tauranga has had only a few starts. The Lucullus —-Taci lull iias shown up on each occasion and an early improvement in her form can lie looked for. If Tambourine is produced at the coming meeting she Will come in for good support.

Flying Prince, who is a member of F. e" Loomb's team for racing at the Bav of Plenty meeting figures in the Cup with 7.12 and in the Flying Handicap with 5.5. The Hying King Vanga colt has not been seen out since the New Year racing at Ellerslic and for that reason lie may be found in need of a gallop. if he lines up ■in the right order, however, lie should be handy among the grade lie will meet on Saturday.

For over a fortnight past the imported mare Celerity 11. has been under a cloud owing to a display of weakness in front, says a Southland writer. Her retirement was even contemplated recently, but it was decided to give her another chance and J A. Rowland is now seeing what can be done with the beautiful daughter of Gainsborough, who should some day enrich her owner's stud at Otautau." Her successful English family has few representatives in Maorlland.

Dainty Manners was prominent for the greater portion of, the Waildno Highweight Handicap at Paeroa on Monday, although she was stopping over the closing stages of that seven furlong trip. On her latest display, the Jack Abbey—Silver Bonus mare should be a possibility in the Trial Plate, a five furlong journey with which the racing will lie introduced at Tauranga on Saturday.

The hopes of getting Winalot fit to pull off 'another big stake are not as rosy as they were two or three weeks ago". A recent Sydney exchange says that when eased up alter galloping a strong six furlongs at Bamlwick he showed signs of lameness in his near fetlock joint. It had been giving his trainer trouble for some tunc, and it would appear that AYinaiot will not stand much galloping.

Hich Pitch ran sufficiently well in the Ohinemuri Cup to give him some prospect in the lending event at Tauranga. The isirchedon srelding was right in it at ten furlongs fn Saturday’s race. While ho has extra weight to carry at his coming start, the class is not so good.

His victory on the opening day at, Paeroa has earned Chromadxne a rehandicon for the Maunganui Handicap and ihe President’s Hack Handicap at Tauranga. Me Quin Abbey—Uranium gelding now lias 9-a in the former and 8.11 in the latter race. 'They are both six furlong *- events and in whichever Chromadyne is saddled up he is likely to lie hard to beat despite his imposts,

Nine horses are eligible to take on the difficult Riccarton double, the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps, in which only Lady Zetland, Lady Lillian and Grand Knight have succeeded in the past- They are Historic, Merry Damon, Money Mine, Red ■Heckle, To'pere, Gay -Crest, Arikiwal, Great Star and Pride. Brampton has been racing very consistently during the past couple of months. As be has proved his. ability to get a middle distance the Lord Quex —Symbolism gelding is likely to prove a "capable lightweight if he is started in the Cup at Tauranga. Brampton is also in Ihe succeeding event, the Herrics’ Memorial Hack Cup and although he lias a lot of weight in 9.0, the class will give him his chance if it is decided lo send him out in this in preference to ihe main item of the card.

| a year ago the places in the Grand Easier Handicap were filled by Cima- | hue, Great Star and Meadow Lark, and 'it is inieresling Lo find these three nominated again, along with Rin tin Tm and Royal Saxon, who were among i Hic unplaced lot. There wars a field lot seven l'or the Great Mirunm Handij cap last year, and of lids lot Sealowo i (second . ilnylake, Pink Note, and ! Count flavour are engaged again. ! Nighlmareh (the winner) and Amor : ore now in Australia, while Beau Ceslc (third) is having a spell. King Willonyx carried good support 'in his two si arts at the Ohinemuri mectimr. Although lie did not reach a dividend place Ihe Prince Willonyx horse finished close up lo the placed j candidates on both occasions. King XVillonvx appears an acceptor with 7.12 l'or ihe Tauranga Cup. while he is in the Grecrton Handicap with : s.A3. Jn whatever race he is pro-

duced King Willonyx is likely to race well. He lias scored at ten furlongs this season so the distance of the leading event ahead should not trouble him. Overtures have been made to H. Gray by the Sydney trainer W. Booth to go across and do the riding for the stable. It is Gray's intention to make the trip provided lie can get a riding ticket from the authorities over there. If successful lie will leave by Friday's boat from Wellington. Snow Prince has won only one race l this season when he led the field ■ home in the seven furlong Hikulaia I Hack Handicap al ihe Thames fixture ,in January. There was solid support ' for the Snow 7 King—Gipsy Queen gelding in Ihe Hack Cup at Paeroa on l Monday in which he finished fourth 1 after being unlucky in the running. ! Snow Prince figures in Ihe Maunganui ! Handicap, the Herrics’ Memorial Hack ■ Cup and the President s Hack Handi- ; cap at Tauranga. In the company ihe will meet on Saturday, Snow Prince ; should prove capable of giving a good ! account of himself as he is in exceli lent order.

j Bosworlh, who is claimed by a London critic to have an infinitely hotter j chance than SLrcplion of winning Ihe ! Ascot Gold Cup, belongs lo Lord I Derby, who also has the crack fix ci year-old Fairway engaged in Ihe same i race. Bosworlh did not start, in the | last Derby, but, being by Son-In-Law I (by the same sire as Magpie), lie i was expected to improve later in Ihe I season. He, therefore, started in the j St. Leger, went out fourth iavourite, I and, after a gruelling finish, was worn | down and beaten by the Derby winner ! TritfO.
