GREY STREET TREES.
NOT TO BE TOUCHED. LOCAL RESIDENTS ALARMED. “That this meeting regrets the encroachment of lousiness areas upon residential areas in the suburb of Hamilton East, noting especially that portion of the borough South of Wellington Street, which, although previously declared residential, was now declared a business area, and asks the Council for a clearer definition of these separate areas.” This was the text, of a resolution forwarded to the Borough Council at its meeting last evening by the Hamilton East Citizens' Association. Mr J. 11. Boyd, the secretary, in his letter, added that the association would like an assurance from the Council that no trees in any part of Grey Street should lie disfigured or removed as a result of pressure from any direction. Those historic landmarks wore a great asset to the town, and the residents wo.uid not view their removal with equanimity. In moving that the letter bo received, Cr. C. .T. W. Barton said the Council could not possibly agree to giving an assurance that the Grey Street trees would never he disturbed. The present council could not dictate to future councils. Cr. F. J. Farrell asked if the Council would be hold liable if a car ran into a tree. Such a case had recently occurred at Palmerston North. The Mayor (Mr J. R. Fow) replied that the circumstances in that case were exceptional and hi Hamilton there was litlto chance of such an accident. He added that the Ha.mil lon East people could rest assured that the present 'Council had no intention of removing the trees. The motion was carried.
