Six cases of infectious diseases occurred in Hamilton last month as follows: —Tuberculosis, 3; scarlet fever, 2; diphtheria, 1.
The honorary medical staff of the Dunedin Hospital has made a donation of £4OO to the Obstetrical Fund. This brings the Otago fund over £I7OO.
The third Auckland wool sale o£ the 1929-30 season will be held on March 28. It is expected that there will be an offering of about 10,000 bales.
Twenty permits for buildings valued at a total of £10,177 10s were issued in the Hamilton Borough last mouth, compared with £13,020 in February, 1929. Building fees amounted to £37.
A proposal to seek a -Royal Charter for the Australasian. Institute of Secretaries was unanimously approved by members -of the New Zealand division of that body at a luncheon-meeting held at Auckland yesterday.
The young woman passenger who was quarantined for smallpox after the arrival of the Aorangi from Vancouver on February 23 was discharged from M'otuihi Island this morning. The island will be thrown open to the public again as a pleasure resort on Saturday.
A complaint against the cost ol school books, received yesterday by the Auckland Education Board, will be forwarded to the Education Department. The St. lleliers School Committee staled that the cost was a serious problem for parents. It asked the board to consider obtaining cheaper books or, as au alternative, the securing of better value for money.
“Barton’s folly docs not appear to be so foolish after all,*’ remarked C.r. G. J. W. Barton at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, referring to the transformation which has recently been effected to the interior of the Town Hail. “Formerly, I had opposed any alterations to the hall,” he added. “But now I see the change that has been wrought, 1 think it has been well worth while.”
Is T o definite ruling as to the responsibility for doctors’ fees in the case of a doctor being called in by a school teacher in a case of emergency, is obtainable from the Education Department, according io a letter received from the Auckland Education Board at a meeting of the Auckland Primary School Committees’ Association last evening. The department knew of no instance ■where the parent had refused to pay under the circumstances, and was of the opinion that every case would have to be considered in all its legal aspects.
Large entries have been received for the annual athletic sports of the South Auckland Primary Schools, lo be held ou Rugby Park to-morrow. All of the Hamilton schools are strongly represented, and there will also be present a large contingent of competitors from many ol‘ the country schools. A comprehensive programme has ‘been arranged, and there is every prospect of a very successful meeting. Am invitation is extended to all parents and others interested, to be present. The first event will be commenced in tho morning, and the programme will be continued throughout the day.
