The successful play, “Journey’s End,” has been turned into a novel by the author, R. C. Sheriff, collaborating with Vernon Bartlett, and will be published in London Diis month.

John Frederick Pryoe appeared before Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S-M., in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court this morning, charged with lending a- rifle lo a friend without taking the precaution to first obtain a permit for doing so. He was fined 10s.

The Railway Department will run a special excursion train from Auckland to Rotorua during next week-end. Cheap fares will be charged. The train leaves Auckland at 12.40 p.m. on Saturdav, leaving Rotorua at a. 20 on Sunday. Full particulars are advertised.

At a meeting held at Raglan it was decided to continue the local branch of the Workers’ Educational Association, which was formed last year. It will be conducted as before, under the box scheme, with lectures prepared by Hie Canterbury Workers’ Educational Association. The course this season will deal with music, art and literature of the JSth century. Mr Kirkwood was clc-cted leader, and Dr. \V. M. Sanders lion, secretary.

The first shipment of steel in connection with the construction of the new water tower, consisting of 23 tons of iron plates, arrived yesterday. About 100 tons of steel reinforcings for the base slab will arrive from England to-day. The contractors had been unable to make as early a start as anticipated owing to the delay in the arrival of the materials. They will now be able to make progress with the construction work.

Great amusement was caused at the tennis tournament at the Rosstrevor Street courts yesterday afternoon. when the Australian team was posing before a battery of cameras operated by both professional and amateur photographers. “Are ycru ready?” was inquired from various quarters when G. J. Donohoe, a young and popular merabc. of the feam, replied “Just a minute,” and insisted on patting down tiie hair of his confreres before the cameras clicked.

Answering a question at the meeting addressed by him at Franklon last night, Mr E. J. Howard, Labour member for Christchurch South, said the Labour Party had moved a no-con-lklence motion in Ibe United Government, but the Reform Party bad not supported the motion. A voice: And if Hie Reform Party had moved a vote of lio-conlldence Labour would not have supported it. (Laughter.) Mr Howard: No, for the reason that the Labour Party pledged itself to oust the Reform Government from the Treasury Benches, and they are still out. (Laughter.)
