DISTRICT HAPPENINGS.

Personal. Mr Robert Green, who has recently rqe turned from a tour of the Rangitikei district, reports the country there looking well and the stock in excellent condition. Mr A. Pellow, Postmaster at Paeroa, has been appointed to a similar position at Te Kuiti, to fill the vacancy left by Mr S. J. Williams, \yho recently retired on superannuation. Sister Rita Snowden has been appointed to assist the R-ev. J. Grindlav, Methodist Minister for Otorohanga and district, and will frequently preach at out-back localities. School Sports.. The combined Rewa Rewa and Otewa schools picnic, held at Otewa, was largely attended by district settlers and their families. A comprehensive athletic programme had been promoted, in which ail ages and sexes took part. A splendid luncheon was provided by the ladies, and the beautiful location —on the banks of the Waipa River, added further pleasure to the outing. Popular Function. A popular and crowded dance was held at Paewhenua on Saturday night, when large numbers of visitors from Ot-orohanga were present. Valedictory. Mr Harry W. Short, who left the Te Mawhai district to reside in America, was farewelled by a large number of friends in the local hail, at a complimentary dance and social. Mr Short was the recipient of a valuable New Zealand rug, a wallet, and other presents and souvenirs, besides a substantial cheque from his iale employers. Mr Short left for America on the Jith inst., by the Aorangi, and will reside in Detroit, in order to gain further experience in the motor industry. Annual Picnic. The annual picnic of the Tokanui Hospital on Wednesday last was larcgly attended. The site was ideal and the weather glorious. Off the Land.

A very fine crop of artichokes has been grown by Mr M. Eyre, who farms near the northern border of the King Country, near Pirongia. The plants are fully ten feet high and very uniform over Ihc whole cropSown after a crop of potatoes from home-saved seed, and without any manure, the results speak volumes for the suitability of the soil and the rotation of crops. Another splendid stand of the same crop is one grown by Mr Langkylde, a noted pig-breeder of Otorohanga. To those interested in pig-breeding and fattening, this remarkable crop of artichokes (a valuable pig food) is well worth a visit of inspection. Show Success. At the recent Greymouth A. and P. Show “Meadowland Baby.” a pedigree Jersey cow, bred by Mr F. O. R. Phillips, at Otorohanga, gained _ reserve championship honours in a strong field. The Weather. Very warm weather was a feature of last week-end. Although Sunday and Monday nights were cold, Tuesday night was oppressively sultry. [Vlotor Collision. A motor collision occurred on the new highway between Otorohanga and Hangatild. A wandering pig caused one of the drivers to swerve suddenly, resulting in a severe contact with an approaching car. Both vehicles were damaged, but the occupants escaped injury. Speeding Lorries. The Waitomo County Council is up in arms against excessive speeding of lorries. Cr. Wilson remarked at the last meeting, “They are going like scalded oats.” Drastic action is to be at once taken against offenders. Valedictory. Mr S. Pratt, a member of the Waitomo County Council, has resigned his seat (Te Kuiti Riding), as he is leaving the Dominion to take up his residence in Western Australia. Cr. Pratt - had represented his riding for the past four years and was farewelled by his fellow councillors. Tennis. The Te Kuiti A team visited Otorohanga on Saturday and engaged a local mixed team, winning on the aggregate, fifteen games to five. The Otorohanga B team visited Te Kuiti the same afternoon and were also defeated, with the scores standing at fifteen to four. Cricket. Te Kuiti ond Otorohungo High School teams met on the Otorohanga School pitch on Saturday, and a splendid contest resulted in Te Kuiti winning by an innings and five runs. The players and their friends were generously entertained on the grounds after the match.
