PIAKO COUNTY.
MEETING OF COUNCIL
SPEED OF MOTORISTS. Cr. W. R. Lowry presided at the monthly meeting of the Piako County Council, Crs.. W. Stewart, W. F. Stark, W. H. Emett, W. McLean, W. C. Kennedy, F. W. Walters and H. Magill also being present. A letter was read from the Hamilton Borough Council asking whether the local bodies in the No. 3 heavy traffic district were prepared to accept the Magistrate’s order allocating the fees received for a period from March 31, 1929, until May 31, 1930, as the basis of apportionment for the 12 months ending May 31, 1931. This was agreed, to. Traffic Control. The Waikato County Council forwarded the following proposals in regard to traffic control: —“Hamilton is to be the head office for the traffic inspectors, but the inspectors may reside in outside districts; the chief inspector and three assistant inspectors to be appointed. The chief inspector to be paid £7 per week, assistant inspectors to be paid £6 per week; each inspector to provide his own motorcar, motor spirit, lubricating oils and tyres to be provided by the combined group. The control of the inspectors will be under an executive committee, consisting of the chairman of each of the six counties in the group. The following has been suggested as a percentage of the total annual cost of salaries and running expenses to be contributed by each local authority in the group: Waikato County Council 19 per ‘cent, Waipa 17 per cent, Matamata 15 per cent, Piako 15 per cent, Raglan 8 per cent, Otorohanga 8 per cent, Te Awamutu Borough 3 per cent, Cambridge 3 per cent, Ngaruawahia 2 per cent, Te Aroha 3 per cent, Morrinsville 3 per cent, Huntly Town District 2 per cent, Matamata Town District 2 per cent.” The chairman referred to the speeding cases lately before the S.M. Court in Te Aroha.
Cr. Walters said in regard to me attitude taken up by the Auckland Automobile Association he would not renew his membership this year, and considered every country settler should take up the same position. As the matter now stood the association was receiving membership subscriptions and using the money to defeat the County Council in its endeavour to stop undue speeding and endangering the safety of the publio. Cr. Magill endorsed these remarks. After further discussion it was resolved to approve the scheme as set forth by the Waikato County Council. Cr. Watters moved and Cr. Magill seconded, that other county councils be written to drawing attention to the Magistrate’s decision in regard to recent speeding cases and to the action of the Automobile Association in defeating the objects of the county after receiving membership support from the county settlers. —Carried.
