SHAW MEMORIAL TO SIR RUSSELL. BRANSON LEADS THE SPRINT FIELD HOME. TRADESMAN ' AND GLENOTUS DOUBLE WINNERS. Tho Oh.'nemuri Jockey Club’s two days’ annual meeting was ooncluded at Paeroa yesterday in ideal weather before a large attendance. Racing of a good standard was again provided. Sir Russell got the verdict in the Shaw Memorial Handicap in which Maori Boy and Desert Glow were in the places while the sprint honours in tne Paeroa Handicap went to Branson over flvvarere and Leitrim. Tradesman completed a double at the meeting when the Raceful two-year-old won the Waitekauri Handicap in which Bells of Shandon and Wild Time deadheated for second. By winning the Hauraki Plains Steeplechase Glenotus was credited with the two cross-country events at the meeting. Boomerday and Odin filled the places yesterday. Glenstar, Grand Arch and Star Comet finished in that order in the Hurdles yesterday. In the Hlkutaia Hack Cup Quinsilia, who led Page Boy and Perennis at the judge’s box, returned a wide price. Tenakoe got home narrowly from Chromadyne In the Waihi Handicap in which Sweet Whisper was third while Owalraka, Awamutu and Qulnslllia were the placlngs in the Waikino Hlghweight Handicap, tho concluding event of the meeting. Totalisator returns showed a slight Increase over last season’s figures while gate receipts were also improved.
Leitrim was favourite with £826 from Taku Tama £630, Value £447 and Branson £363. Awarere was the early leader from Leitrim, Taku Tama, Kingfield and Town Bird. At the end of two furlongs Town Bird had charge, hut Awarere showed the way into the straight to Taku Tama, Town Bird, Leitrim, British King and Branson.’ 'The leaders ran wide round the bend and Branson came fast on the fence in the run home to get the verdict by a head frdm Awarere, with Leitrim a similar distance away third. Taku Tama was fourth, with Kingfield, Value and Rose Lupin in that order. Time, lmin 14 2-ssec. HAURAKI PLAINS STEEPLES. Of £2OO. The first day’s winner, Glenotus, was favourite with £744 from Mashoor £538 and Boomerday £421. Spalpiko ran off at the stand double when leading the first time, leaving St. Warrigal in charge from Foxhound and Potoanui. Foxhound took charge a little later and showed the way for a round. At the stand double the last time Boomerday was leading Foxhound, Odin, Glenotus and Potoanui, St. Warrigal having fallen, while Mashoor was pulled up, his rider having lost an iron. Boomerday led Glenotus to the last fence, the former having run wide. In the run home Glenotus -did best to win by a length and a half from Boomerday, with Odin three-quarters of a length away third- Potoanui was fourth, with Brundee Boy and Foxhound down the straight. Awamutu was soon in front and showed the way along the back to Prince Lu, Dainty Manners, Quinsilia and Owairaka. Crossing the top the order was Awamutu,. Prince Lu, Dainty Manners, Owairaka, Quinsilia and The Lamb. Once into the straight Awamutu was challenged by Owairaka, who beat the favourite by a head, with Quinsilia a length and a quarter away third, and The Lamb fourth. Then came King Willonyx, Standfast and Temperature. Time, imin 27 1-5 secs. TOTALISATOR RETURNS, £54,957 FOR THE MEETING. AN INCREASE OF £558. The totalisalor returns for the day were £26,307 against £23,991 10s for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £2315 10s. NOTES ON THE RUNNING
The eight carded appeared for the Second Handicap Hurdles in which Taumai was £OO better backed than Glenstar, with Star Comet third choice. Glenstar .and Grand Arch, the fourth favourite, fought it out, Glenstar winning by three-quarters of a length. Star Comet was two lengths off third, with Freyja and Flying Swift next. Taumai was at the front when he fell five furlongs from home. An Outsider Gets Home. There were twelve starters for the Hikutaia Hack Cup, including Lucky Alice, .who was left off the book. In a good betting race Snow Prince was a good favourite with £l6B more than Mauriaena, while Grand Tea was third in demand. The verdict went to a big outsider in Quinsilia, who dashed up on the post to beat Page Boy who was squeezed back at the start. This is the first heard of Quinsillia since running third at To Kuiti in November. Per-, ennis, who was half a length off in third place ran an improved race to her first day effort. The favourite, who did not get too good a run, was a close fourth, with Mauriaena, Lucky Alice and Always next. Tradesman Again Scores.
There were nine two-year-olds to contest the Waitekauri Handicap for which Grand Spirit was £2OB better fancied than Bells of Shandon, with Tradesman, the first day winner, third fancy at a good price. Tradesman, who began promptly from the rails, was never hea.ded. Wild Time, who was in that place on opening day, looked like getting second, but Bells of Shandon finished fast to share the honours with her.. Grand.,Spirit, .who again dwelt on the mark, was running on in fourth place with Silene and Lapaway next. ..
Leading ‘ Event to Sir Russell.
Leitrim, Pompeius,' Antique and; Grand Tea were withdrawn from the ; Shaw Memorial Handicap for which there were ’ eight starters. Lucy. Hose was favourite with £9O more than Maori Boy, while Desert Glow was next in demand. The fourth favourite, Sir Russell, took the lead half a mile from home and beat Maori Boy by 'a length. Desert Glow, who did not go the early pace, was' running on' third three-quarters of a length off. Lucy Rose, who was not well ridden, was fourth, with Tinokoa nextThe Favourite Just Gets There. Glenison, Royal Visitor, Day Lass and Principal Boy were missing from the Waihi Handicap for which there were eight runners. Tenakoe was favourite with £287 more than Chromadyne, with Yaloricnt third in request. Tenakoe and Chromadyne fought it out, the favourite, with the more experienced horseman, winning by hall' a head. Sweet Whisper followed at an interval of two lengths and a half with Merry Lu and Norval Tea next in order. Branson’s Sprint Win. Lucy Rose, who had started earlier, was the only one missing from the sprint event, the Paeroa Handicap, for which there were eight runners. Leitrim had most attention from investors, carrying £l9O more than Taku Tama, while Value was third choice. The fourth favourite, Branson, finished resolutely to get the verdict by a head from the first day winner, Awarere, with Leitrim third, another head off. Taku Tama was fourth, with Kingfield and Value heading the rest. This was Branson’s first win of the season. Over the Country. Ah Wera was missing froih the Hauraki Plains Steeplechase, in which Glenotus, the first day winner, was the elect with £206 more than Mashoor, Boomerday being next fancied. The favourite beat Boomerday by a length and a half, being assisted by the his rival was taken very wide on the home bend. Odin was in the next place, Mashoor’s prospects being settled through his rider losing an iron. The Last of the Meeting. Branson and Luminary, who were started earlier, were withdrawn from the Waikino Handicap, the concluding event of the meeting, in which Awamutu was a good first choice with £269 more than King Willonyx, with Prince Lu and Lunette evenly supported. The favourite was always in it but Owairaka wore him down to have a head margin at the postQuinsilia, a winner earlier on, was a good third, with The 'Lamb heading the others in a field of eleven. Won by one and a-half lengths, a neck separating second and third. The Totalisator. The totalisator handled £49,827 10s for the day, compared with £48,881 on the corresponding day last year, making the total for the meeting £102,132 against £102,803 10s last year. NOTES ON THE RUNNING. (Special to Times.) TRENTHAM, Monday. The Two-Year-Old Event. Lineage was finally favourite in a great betting race, the Pacific Handicap. A good start saw Lineage begin best and lead on to the course proper from Hard Words and Lady Pam, with Tenterden, Love Song, Jason and Awaken prominent. Hard Words had the measure of Lineage a furlong from home, where Lady Pam was also going well. Lady Pam headed off Hard Words and won by lialf a neck. A good struggle for second saw Jason get the verdict over Hard Words. Awaken was half a length away fourth, with Rapallo, Lineage, Charmaine and Jenny Diver next.
Glare Soores Decisively. Vertigern, Paquito and In the Shade were the favourites in the Autumn Handicap, another solid betting race. Hoylake was slow away, Latin Quarter leading past the stands from Billion, Jaloux and In the Shade. Billion and •Taloux were the leaders down, the back from Latin Quarter, Vertigern, The Hawk, In the Shade, Paquito and Glare. Glare made a fast run round the field from the half-mile, and was up with Billion and Jaloux at the turn, with Paquito, Vertigern and The Hawk handy. Glare came away in the straight to win easily by three lengths. There was a good battle for second. Paquito just beating Jaloux by half a length, with Paitonu right up fourth, closely followed hv In the Shade and The Hawk, with Billion some distance back, heading the rest. Field Disorganised in Suburban. A melee caused by The Raider galloping on the heels of First Money about a furlong from home in the Suburban Handicap disorganised the field. White Fang received his chance, and he was the lucky one. Both Eaglet and Royal Saxon suffered. At the same time it looked as if First Money would have been hard to beat, for he was going well. Cimabue was also in the trouble. The affair altered the result of the race completely. Eaglet, First Money and Richfiei=

Eaglet and Royal Saxon dead heated for second place, ■ Cimabue,’ Royal Duke, Richfield and Flair right up next. Tho Belmont Handicap. Mandy scored comfortably in the Belmont Handicap. She had a good deal to spare from Lucretia, who was too good for Ilavaspol, who real > na every chance. Hunting Call did :v stay on. Ilavaspot, Mandy, Uo ; u. r, and Hunting Call carried the I>ullc , . the money. Mandy won comfot'lahl) by two lengths from Lucretia, who beat Ilavaspot by a head. Hunting Call was fourth and Sunkissed, Leader, Oral and Glenrossic v.eio next.
