MURCHISON SHOW.
OPENED BY MINISTER. TRIBUTES TO THE RESIDENTS. (ißty Telegraph.—Press Association,) -■ins NELSON, Monday. Hon, G. W. Forbes, who was enthusiastically welcomed, opened the .Murchison Agricultural and Pastoral Show on Saturday. The attendance was almost as large as last year. Mr Forbes complimented the people upon their decision to hold a show' this year, notwithstanding all their difficulties. The Minister felt sure that the people had derived mucli encouragement from (he assistance the people of the Dominion had given during their time of trial. Jt was always heartening to know in lime of trouble or distress that others w'ere ready to lend a helping hand. He realised that it would be impossible to completely restore the damage done, and where ill ere had been bereavement through the earthquake the loss could never be compensated for. On bis way up lie iiad noticed railway works in progress. Sir Joseph Ward, being a business man, recognised that disconnected lines were of little benefit, and it was only by opening up those sections and completing the through lines that theycould he made to pay. He gave an assurance that during the coming winter tile number of men employed on these works would bo considerably increased. Mr Forbes again complimented the people and the show officials on their decision to carry on, which was typical of tiic best British spirit. To-day the Minister was accorded a civic reception by a large gathering at Motueka, and later visited Hie fruit, tobacco, and oilier farms.
He will return to Wellington this evening.
