Fbcn our Own Correspondent. Mr Forsyth, the Roads and Bridges Department's bridge inspector, is to have the building of the Opotoru bridge under his supervision. Iron trucks and rails are to be used for the earthwork, and arrangements are being made tor the supply of the necessary stone. j; W J Smith was sworn in an a Justice before Mr Northcroft, S.M., on Tue>o*s">-. , Messrs J,' Darrow and J. Watkins were passengeri to Waitara by the s.s. Kia Ora on Tuesday, en route to tha Christohurch Exhibition. Mr J. A. Young, of Hamilton, visited Raglan and Te Mata during the week, and was positively besieged with patients, n.twithstanding the tact that other dentists come here periodically. Mr Charles Gilmour has undergone tiu operation in Auckland for an affection of the face, and latest reports are to the effect that he is making a good recovery. Disappointment is felc that no provision was in.tde on the supplementary estimates for several local works for which grants were expected. Mr Smith wired the member for tha district and the Minister for Public Works asking whether a sum of money was available for the formation of the street to give an approaoh to the Opotoru bridge on the Raglan side of the water, and in rep y Mr Greenslade said: 'Whea the bridge is tiuiahed, I think you will fiad tbat the necessary approaches will be made.' | Mr Rutherford his sent two exhibits of dressed flax fioin the mills to the Christchurch Jixhibition. A "powder and patches" ball took place in the Te Mata Hall on Friday night of list weik, and the affair attracted quite a large attendance from ail parts of the dittrict. Much artistic taste was displayed by tUn lidios iu the adornment of their hair and the partial disguise of their features by little patches of court plaster, the effect in many cases being positively bewitching. Ihe supper was a dainty one, snd served in very choice style, and the entire »irangementß were of such a character as to reflect the greatest oredit on those who were responsible for them.
