REGATTA AT HAMILTON.
The Hamilton annual regatta and swimming races were hold on the lake, yesterday and had it not been for the rain would have proved most success fill. The fore mum and earlier part nf the afternoon was beautifully fine and tempted out a large crowd, there being over GOO on the ground about three o'clock when tho rain came on and law numbers soon left. The weather also interfered greatly with tho management and delayed I several nf the events, The officials all worked hard to make the gathering a success and had the ruin"lield off their efforts would, no doubt, have been eminently successful. The principal event of the day was tho 100 yards Amateur Swimming Championship of New Zealand, for which afield of four started, including H, J, Bailey, the holder of all the Championship's for the colony. He, however, had togive way this time, the winner being F. A, Hedges. Bailey got a very bad start, and although he made up some of his ground in splendid style he could not get on torms with Hedges, The other competitors were J. H, Hume, and M, Scott the latter of whotn when in a good position gave up swimming, as he thought he had passed the post, The 220 yards Swimming Championship of Waikato was won by J. H. Humo, Aho Bishop, a native, being second. It was very unfortunate that in all the boat races some unpleasantness or mishap occurred. A protect was bilged against the winner of the Hob R-iy canoe race on the grounds that his was not a proper entry, £) the four-oared gunwale gigs the Te Aroha crew went round a wrong post and although being first by a considerable distance the race was awarded to the Ngaruaw.ihia Rowing Club's crew Young Colonials. The other Ngaruawahia boat broke an oar and pulling with three got second place, Owing to the rain falling heavily the committee endeavoured to get the Pair-oar Boat Race started earlier than on the programme and sent the boats nut when the starter thinking all the crews were nut started those at the post lialf-anhonr earlierthan the advertised tune. After the race it was found that two of the Te Aroha boats had not gone out. The course was completed the Ngaruawahia crew Young Colonials and Try Flukes coming in first and second respectively, The Te Aroha crews naturally objected and the committee had nothing t > do but start the race at the proper time, when only one Ngaruawahia crew, Try Flukes (Rotana and A, Douglas), went out and after a grand race won by abnut half a length from Te Aroha. Several of tho events did not come off owing to the small number of entries and the heavy downpour that set in. The following are the results Maiden Swimming Race (opkn) lOOyrds, Prize, silver meda'.
