A smouMß incident was witnessed on a recent Saturday at the Opera Comique in ;Paris. ' Mascagni's '' Cavalleria" Rusticana" was to. bo given; but when the tinie came for them to siugall the male members of tho chorus who had taken their places on the statje remained silent, The result was that the orchestra stopped and the curtain was dropped, The choristers have, it was explained, been for some weeks claiming a rise in their salaries, but could get'no'satisfaction. Tliey agreed, therefore, upon the demonstration referred to.' Each one ot thorn is paid'£4B a-year, and they wanted this wage t6 be raised to £72. When they filed off the stage they were sent to their robins-room, at the door of which 1 two city guards were placed tO;prevent them leaving until tho manager had seen them, He, told thorn that he could not possibly give them the terms they 'asked,' and gave them an hour to consider the matter. At the end of that interval, one of the forty said that he was ready to sing. The others hooted him, The women choristers had not joined in the strike, which ended :in being prematurely closed for the night and in threats of actions being brought.
