Tiie decision to increase the British army is causing excitement in Cairo, but there is still much excitement in the provinces which is being fomented by violent attacks of the native press, who eulogise the Khedive's attitude. The second battalion of the Devonshire Regiment, who were on the way home from India, has been landed at Port Said, where they will remain until the arrival of the South Lancashire Regiment from Gibraltar. Paris, January 26.
The Marquis of Dufferin h»i informed the French Government that the action of Britain in reinforcing the troops in Egypt does not imply any modification of the assurances given regarding the occupation of the country. M. Waddington has been instructed to ask Lord Roseberry to specify the incidents which h»V6 occasioned the reinforcements.
The feeling in Paris over the Egyptian qnestion is quieting under the assurance that the Government will demand an explanation from Great Britain of her action in sending reinforcements to Egypt. London', January 26.
A detachment of 3500 South Wales Borderers stationed at Aldershot has been ordered to Alexandria.
