A NARROW ESCAPE.
■ : [Br TKI,KGH.U'H.-PRESS ASSOCIATION J New Plymouth,' Last Night, The passengers by the express train from Wellington to New Plymouth had a rery narrow escape on Saturday last. 'Just as the engine with fix cars was approaching Noiv Plymouth a enw got in front and ran forward along the lino until she .arrived at a cinv"stnp. There the HtiMunate animal got her lags entangled and was unable to get out of the wiy More the engine was upon it, The cowcatcher came into violent contact with the beast but failed to dis- : lodge it bodily from its position with the result that the engine was thrown off the line. The point where this, occurred wa ■■ on the breakwater, and though the pas songers were unaware of it, the whole train was in imminent danger of being thrown into the sea. Happily the' wheels of the engine continued to run with one flange od the rails for some time; then bv a lncky chance it dropped back into its right position. The engineer was naturally rather shaken by the occurrence. While the engino was off the line he every instant expected to bo hurled over the narrow breakwater into the sea and felt himself powerless to prevent it, for if he had attempted to put on the break the result would have. been fatal. : About thirty pcr?ons were or board at the time.
