In t France recontlva great international horse-jumpin™ contest for the championship of the world.took place, twenty-six horses competed for f the. honour and :> sweepstake of £IOOO. ■ The,'horses'were the best-known Enelish, French, Spanish; and American animals, The jump was a specially made gate with loose, topi bar, starting at, a feet, 6 in .height. This was cleared by all except' two' French horses, ! The bar was then'raised' two : inoheß at a time until the height was sft lOin, which was clearodi by-only, six out of the twenty-four competitors, the successful animals being New Moon,' Corset, and Nancy (French' horseß)j the Spanish Alpine, : the Chicago horse Tallyho, and the woll-known English jumper Tasmania.. The bar was .then raised to 6ft, and Tasmania, whioh Holds, the Gft record; and was ridden' by Veter-inary-surgeon Storenson, of Holloway, led, off and cleared the, gate in capital stylo. ridden by M, Pnrotte, was equally successful, but the other horses failed, Tho contest thus lay between Tasmania.and Now Moon, but the latter, after getting over Gft lin, knocked tho bar down at 6ft 2in, which, However,'was jumped in' splendid fashion by Tasmania, tho English horeo being deolared the winner amid much excitement. Mr. Stevenson, the .rider, had thebar'raised'to Gft, din,'and Tasmania jumped"this extraordinary high r obstacle in a marvellous clean manner, tho immensethrong I cheering : with great heartiness,; Tasmania is, an Irish-bred .horse,. and recently won tho high-jumping contest at, HondoD, Hois now chempinn of tho world.
