HAMILTON LIGHT INFANTRY.
On Thursday evening last tho first panvio ill the above corps fur the New Year took place. There was n good muster, Capt, Reiil in command, Limit', Kirk and Dyer being also present. Itef»re the l»rado was dismissed, the prizes lired fur nn I\ aw' \ ear s Day were presented by Capt. Ileid, who addrewed a few congratulatory words to the winners of the Company belt.and Hmvdon a medal. He also said the fact that so ninny prizes had boon contributed by tho townspeople of Hamilton was a most encouraging one and ho felt sure tho men would appreciate the liberality of the donnw. He recognised that the encouragement of target practice and a healthy intorest in shooting would do much to strengthen the company, and ho trust;d the now Shooting Committee to lie elected that night would use their best endeavours to that end. Reforring to the strength of the company, he said the company wtw not so strong numerically at tho commencement of this year as it had been at the beginning of the one just closed. This had been caused by himself. There hud been men in the company who, apparently took nn interest whatever in it: they attended drill irregularly, and made nn clfort to earn their capitation, and tho comoany. ho thought would be better without them. He had there foro caused their names to be struck off the roll Before such orasnre, tho comoany had numbered forty-eight: but out of that number but forty had qualified themselves f:r captation ; and, _ as a consequence, the company were deprived of nearly WO of captation that they would have had had the men mnde themselves efficient, They could thus see for themselves the bad effect such members had on the finances of the company. He then called for three cheers for those who had presented the prizes to the corps, which were enthusiastically given. The following is the prize list:-
