THE TURNIP CROP.

On all sidos it is " speed tho plough, to propara tho land for tho Swedes," Of this I crop, a very large area will be sown in Waikato this season. Whether the farm be large or small, the turnip crop has, of late years, taken an important place in its economy. Just at this season of the year, when food is abundant and to spare, with stock up in good condition, tho har.l worked husbandman busy and anxious over harvest work, might perhaps bo forgiven for overlooking the turnips. We have however, only tn'loak back to the past winter, ti realise tho immenso value which a good field of these roots poisesiea to tho average firmer. We all remember tho disastrous 1 isscs and tho low prices which ruled for store sheep last winter, in snnijcaies not much more than the value of the wool on their backs, all of which was owing to the general scarceness of grass combined with a short crop of roots, We question very much, in view 'jf the modern system of farming, whether there is really a crop grown of such all-round impoitanco as that of turnips, It is therefore with considerable pleasure that we hear of such large areas being carefully worked up for these roots, We say, '■ go ahead," no settler ever got into difficulties through growing turnips, If he happens to have a good crop, and can do without it, there ara others who require them and at prices which leave a fair margin after all expenses are paid, to say no thing of the subsequent fertility of the land.
