AFRICAN DIAMOND MINES.
A recent number of the Por 1 ; Elizabeth Telegraph gives an account of the operations of the De Beers Consolidated mines for 15 months ended 30tli June last. The magnitude of the concern is shown by the fact that during the period mentioned, no less than 3,338,553 loads of blue ground was treated for a yield of 3,035,451 carats of diamonds, which realised £3,031,042. The total expenditure amounted to £2,794,234 so that there remained a profit of £1,137,303 on the operations for that perfod. A balance of £377,532 is carried forward, and a reserve fund of £621,12S has bceu created and invested in English stocks The company has a national'significance, for of the millions of money raised by the Cape Government for railway extension the company contriouted one-fourth, and besides the previous large investments in Chartered Company stock another £IOO,OOO has been lent at G per cent. Out of its affluence the compiny has voted £IOOO to the Kimberley Hospital, £250 to the Kimbcrlt-y Public Library, and £250 to Ihe Kimberley Nazareth House.
