Donedin, Dec. 22.—W001: The first series of local sales for this season will commence to-morrow (Thursday) at the Oddfellows' Hall, Rattray street, when we have the first sale opening with a catalogue comprising over I,ooo] bales, mostly greasy cross-bred, some half-bred, only a very small portion merino, and none of very high character, A good attendance of buyers is expected, and we have no doubt but prices ruling will compare favourably with those lately ruling at Home for similar descriptions.—Grain : Wheat: Since our last report this market has not undergone any change for the better, but lather the reverse, as far as price is concerned. The little business Hone in milling sorts is entirely confined to (he exigencies of millers here, who, while willing to puig'iase medium to good samples at from 2s 3d to2s 9J, decline, except when particularly necessary, to give over the lattter figure for really prime. Fowls' wheat has a moder Hv fair demand, and a considerable i| ...iitity is being disposed of, but buyers, finding more than sufficient offering, are now less disposed to pay the prices lately obtaining. Quotations : For prime milling, 2s 9a to 3'. — Oats : A moderately fair demand is being experienced for these since we last reported, both for coastal and intercolonial requirements. A very fair local demand also exists, but prices are unchanged, and niav nor, improve. Tho holidays now coming on will no doubt interfere with operations, but after these are over we expect to see business assuming a livelier tone, when the small Btocks now remaining on hand will be cleared off at an improvement on present j rates, which are up till now being very firmly maintained.—Dairy produce : Prune salt butter, dairy-made, in Pond's boxes, is wanted for export at from 8d to9d ; medium hard to place except at low prices. Factorymade is worth lOd to lid per lb. Cheese has only a very modest inquiry. Factory, medium size, is hold for 4jd to 5d ; loaf shape, ssd to 5Jd; dairy, to 4Jd per lb.—Flax : In sympathy with the easier tone of the market at Home the local market shows less animation, nevertheless all consignments arriving in marketable condition are readily placed. Fair average quality are woith £16 10s to £17; good to bast, £17 10s to £18; superior, £18 10s to £19 per ton.
