ARE ALL WOMEN LIARS?
Professor Lombkoso has devoted four pages in the La Revue des Revues to proving that ' all women are liars.' Physical weakness is the first cause adduced ; modesty is the second ; lore of men's admiration is the third ; whilo the fourth is the desire to appear interesting. Quick but reliable apprehensivenesses is the fifth, closely allied with vivid imagination. The duties of maternity conclade Professor Lombroso's case, for ha declares that lies on the part of the mother are absolutely necessary if she would train up a child in the way it should go. The first reason Professor Lombroso adduces (says Woman) — that of physical weakness—is of no count among civilised people. Modesty will for ever have its supporters and coadjutors among the chivalrous of tho Professor's own sex. Love of men's admiration is, thanks to our nobler training, developing into love of men's respect, and is thus conducive to moral uprightness and truth. Our quick receptive powers are, under modem influences, being turned to good account. And any sensible mother will tell the Professor that,, oven in the preservation of its innocence, no child need ever bo told a lie. We want stronger arguments than he has given us before wo admit that untruthfulness on tho part of a woman is either necessary, natural, or ineradicable.
