THETAURANGA COUNTY COUNCIL AND THE GOVERNMENT.

x ♦ K At the last meeting of the Tauranga \ County Council Mr KiUen spoke very a warmly as to the way this district has K been treated by the present so-called e Liberal Government. The county has i, been put not only to a great deal of e trouble, but also to some expense, and y the Pinko county as well. They also 11 sent very strong memorials to have the e road known as Thompson's opened out ? for wheel traffic, for at present, as one councillor said, the road begins nowhere r and ends nowhere ; and although the . two counties interested returned repreb seutatives who have supported all the •j present Government's measures, yet not , one farthing has been granted to complete this road, and it does seem very > unliberal policy not to open out a road ? on which some thousands have been spent, for so far perfectly useless work, and as j there is no traffic on the portion formed, it is fast (from the undergrowth, etc.), > getting into a state of nature ; besides, ) if this road were completed, it would be 1 a great feeder to the railway. The Go- , vernment are lavishing money on Te i Aroha besides opening out most valuable country. At present the whole East Coast from Auckland to Gisborne is at ' the mercy of one steam-packet company, and on all sides in the district are to be i heard " curses not loud but deep "against i our " mis-representatives," As to the gallant Colonel, who was returned by a • large majority here at the last two elections, but has quite forgotten to address the constituents here, he is promised at least a good heckling when he does address them, aud it is said if he seeks reelection he will not be at the top of the poll at the close of next election. Captain Macmillan stated at the same meeting that he would come forward as a candidate at the next election, and if the ladies had votes he would be sure to be returned.—Exchange.
