LOCAL BODY APPOINTMENTS.

TO TUB KDITOII,

I Sin, —Could you inform mu if it w tho proper thing at tho annual mculiimn of County Council to appoint a cWk ami engineer (whore thern i< uno) for the ensuing twelve months. I ask thin qnf-st.inn because in tho reports of the two County Councils, puhli-ihc-l in your issue to-day— Waipa and Waiknln—l notice that nt Waipa the cleric and engineer were re-ap-pointed, both at increased salaries, while at Waikato no mention of the re-appointment of clerk was made (I think there is no county eneiner-r, one being employed for tho Riingiriri Riding when necessary.) Perhaps this i.s only necessary where an increase of salary is made, and no doubt tho councillors are of the same opinion as many ratepayers, that the Waikato County clerk's salary (L'lso) is high enough, or does that gentleman hold the office in perpetuity? In comparison with tho salary paid to the I Waipa clerk (t'i)O), where tho work is about equal, there is a treat difference. While writing I might say that tho appointment of Mr .Tames Forrest on the Hospital Board lias given general satisfaction at this end of the district, and it would have been well if Mr Johnson, or some other gentleman, had been put on the Board to represent that end of the district. The affairs of the Hospital Hoard have been run from Hamilton long enough, and if there «vero a little less Hamilton in it still, ratepayer would be better satisfied.—Yours, etc., RA'i'KPAYBR. Cambridge, November 24th, lSfl2. I
