£152,885 0 S hqual to 3s Hd in the £. This would amount to a dividend on the proofs nf 3s lid in the £1, or about Is in the £1 less than was yielded during the same period by bankrupt estates in Dunedin ; but Mr Lnwsou considers it only fair to the business people of Auckland to point out that during the years 19S0-ISS9, a number of failures occtiirecl which were not ordinary comim roial failures, but which were directly triceable to land speculation. Taking a dozen typical cases, he finds that the liabilities reached the enormous total of £]$■-> w> while the assets available for divi.-iriii in" the twelve estates only amounted to £-2147, or less than 'A'A in the £1. Miminariug these figures from the total, the average dividuiieil is raised to over 3s 7d in the £1, and as these are only a portion of the legacy left by the land boom, it is evident that in rrspoct to fair ordinary tradintr, the Auckland record will eompiro very favourably with that of DuiK'din. — ITr-rihl.
