We have to heartily congratulate the business-men and their assistants who attended the public meeting held in Hamilton last night, in connection with the half'holirlay closing movement, upon the very successful termination of the proceedings. The meeting was very largely attended, as will bo seen by the report appearing elsewhere in this issue, and the greatest cordiality prevailed. On the part of the employers there was a generous disposition to fall in wi h the mevemerit, and it is manifest that keeping the half-holiday on Saturday will be more generally appreciated than that of holding it O'i any other day of the week. By the exercise of a little tact and patience, what little opposition there may at present be to this proposition will soon be overcome, and we hope to see the whole of the business people of WaikatD full into line, and thus, so far as they are concerned, obviate the necessity for further legislation on the question. It must bo patent to those following the signs of the times that, failing an amicable solution of the question, the present Act will be amended, and judging by the expression of public opinion throughout New Zealand, the Saturday half-holiday will be decided upon. To help forward to an easy solution of the difficulty, employees are asked to make their pay day on Friday, the auctioneers will be approached with the view of their discontinuing Saturday sales, and the general public are invited to exprpss their sympathy towards the shop-assistants by making their purchases on Friday night or before 1 o'clock on Saturday — chinges which will no doubt cause some little inconveniences at first, but in view of the great boon which will thereby be bestowed upon such a large section of the community the sacrifices dc rnanded >ve feel sure will be cheerfully made.
