FRISCO MAIL SERVICE.
(BY KLKCTItIO TEI.KIJKAI'H.— COI'VItrOHT). Loxdo.v, November l>. Mr Aitxor.Tj Alorlev, PostmasterGonend, has dcJinitely refused to renew the Ban Francisco mail contract. Tho Postmaster-General, in a letter to tho Agent-General of New Zealand, regrets the decision of the Treasury regarding the San Francisco mail .service. At the same time he denies that the service is an absolute necessity from an Imperial standpoint, but says that it is one which the colonies should reasonably provide if satisfied of its requirements. iSvdxey, Xovember -1. Mr Kidd, Postmaster- General, lias not received any cable message from England with reference to tne .San Francisco mail contract. lie states the offer of £-1000 to the Now Zealand Government was made on tho assumption that England would decline to contribute. If the British Government had agree:! to renew the contract, ho does not think the Now South Wales Parliament would have sanctioned the payment of the £-1,000. [BY TELBOKAI'It —riIESS ASSOCIATION" "|. Wβt,mm;ton, TliursJay. The refusal of the Imperial postal authorities to contribute to this service provokes a good deal of comment. The Post concludes a leader on the subject as follows .—" Tin's colony certainly cannot afford to make up to them the loss of tho Imperial contribution, and New South Wales, it is quite certain, will not do so. It has already agreed to increase its contribution to £-1000, which may in some degree compensate the contractors for the loss of the Imperial contribution. The probability, however, is that the the San Francisco service will be abandoned as soon as the Chicago Exhibition season is over; if indeed the contractors think it worth their while to continue it until then."
