Auctions. JOHN KNOX J HAMILTON AUCTION MART. J This Day, at 2 p.m. The undersigned will hold his uiusl > sale of POULTRY, PRODUCE, FURNITURE, &c. JOHN KNOX, Auctioneer. fpO STAND AT LOCHIEL, OHAUPO, L CAP-A-PIE. CAP-A-PIE is a dark brown in colour, with a good look out and intelligent head, broad forehead, full-set eye, pricked ears, fine broad jaws, open nostril and clean muzzle, very muscular and arched neck, set on to grand shoulders. He has a capital middle piece, with muscular back and loins, and great depth of rib, and quarters like a cart horse, his thighs and gaskms being perfection. His hocks are powerful and well-turned, knees forward and clean, short cannons, with beautiful Hat bone. His height is about 15 hands 3 inches, and he stands over a lot of ground, being one of the low-level sort, while for general stoutness he cannot be beaten. So far as breeding is concerned, he pnssesses the stoutest and most fashionable strains, the texture of which he has proved on the turf beyond a doubt. He is related to most of the principal winners in Australia, being by that wonderful stud horse Maribyrnong (sire of Richmond, Imperial, Horatio, Hamlet, Miss Jessie, Sunshine, Dagmar, Calamia, Woodland?, The Rake, Bathurst, Hecla, Segenlioe, Saiouara, and others who have been amongst the best performers in Australia, the names of which recall brilliant victories in the Maribyrnong Plate, Champagne, Sires Produce, Derby, Oaks, St. Legtr, Champion, Melbourne Cup, Queen's Plate, Sydney Cup, and other classic races), out of Miss Magus, Maribyrnong by Fisherman (sire of Angler, the sire of Onyx ; Ferryman, the sire of Derby ; Sylvia, the dam of Robin Hood, Goldsborough.and Martini-Henry ; Fishhook, Fanny Fisher, Lady Heron, etc.), out of Rose dc Florence (dam of Ferryman and King of the Ring). As a performer Cap-a-Pie was considered one of the first order. The following appeared in the Australasian after he beat Chester in the St. Leger :— " Cap-a-Pie bore out the good opinion we formed of him when he first appeared in public, yet we could hardly believe that there was any three-year-old but First King that could beat Chester at equal weights. Cap-a-Pie did so, however. Cap-a-Pie was bred by Mr B. Richards, near Richmoud, New South Wales, and he is by Maribyrnong from Miss Magus, by Magus (imp.), from Georgiana (imp.). He possesses a remarkably muscular neck. His shoulders are all that could be desired, aDd behind the saddle he has the power of a dray horse, the muscular development of his thighs being something extraordinary for a thoroughbred horse, and he has an excellent set of legs. His performances up to the Leger were not of a winning character, the only bracket to his name being in a weight-for-age race at the A. J.C. Spring Meeting, but when only half fit he ran a good third for the Derby, and in the Produce Stakes, won by Chester at two years old, he tan like a horse of high class." The following is "Augur's" description of the race for the St. Leger : — "Attention was now directed to the Leger horses, and good judges were decidedly in favour of Cap-a-Pie, albeit the great public form of his formidable rival Chester was considered so superior that many believed he could afford to be a trifle above himself and then dispose of the fine son of Maribyrnong, who is undoubtedly one of the grandest colts that ever stripped upo.i an Australian racecourse. Before leaving the paddock odds of 6' to 4 were freely laid on Chester. The race is soon told, for it was at once evident that Morrison intended to try the cutting down game with the favourite, and he made the running at a strong pace, but Huxley, on Cap-a-Pie, never albwed him to get far away. Half a mile from home Woodlands and Black Eagle were beaten, and the issue was reduced to a match between the two cracks, Chester leading into the straight and past the distance post, when Cap-a-Pie challenged, and amid a scene of the greatest excitement they ran together to the end of the grand stand, when Cap-a-Pie was on equal terms with the favourite, upon whom the great pace began to tell its tale, and faltering a few strides from home he suffered defeat by a head." Cap-a-Pie started first favourite at 5 to 4 on him next day for the Sydney Cup, carrying top weight of 7st 121b, but was beaten by Democrat (4 years, 6st 51b). Next day he met Chester in the Cumbeifc land Stakes, two miles, at level weight?, and one of the grandest races ever seen in Australia took place, the pair, amidst greatest excitement, running a dead heat. The owners, each believing in their re« spective horses, agreed to run off, and as the horses came up neck and neck to the winning post for a third time at the meeting the excitement was intense, but this time Chester got his nose home first. On the fourth day the horses were pulled out in the Australian Plate, aud here what must have proved a great race was spoiled by the rider of Calamia jostling Cap-a-Pie, who, however, beat every* thing else in the race. Cap-a-Pie's other performances include several victories, but enough has been said to show that he was in his year one of the three cracks of Australia, First King and Chester being the only animals class enough to meet him while on the turf. He was purchased vhen first favourite for the Melbourne Cup (Sst Sib) for GOOgs. by the N.Z. Stud Company. Cap-a-Pie has proved his ability to get high-class racers, hurdle horses and steeplechasers, being the sire of Raglan, Sentinel, Capella, Kapai, Signess (the fastest pony south of the line), Sincerity, Hune, Fragrance, Kneecap, Lonely, Maire, Despised, Mirabelle, Christmas, The Colonel, aud other fast horses too numerous to mention. He has aluo proved himself a getter of first-class weight-carrying hacks, hunters, and carriage horses, his stock having taken prizes at all the shows on the West Coast and in Christcluireh. The colours he gets cannot be beaten, he cever having sired anything but whole-coloured browns or bays with black points, and he possesses in a high degree that power so rare in sires of assimilating with all classes of mares.
