PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.

Thr ordinary monthly meeting of the Piiiko County Council was held at Morrinsville, on Tuesday, the 4th inst. Present : Messrs \V. P. Ohepmell (chairman) Heaney, Horrell, Iferries, Harrison, Mc Nicol, Browne and Secklon. Tub Late Clkrk.—A large amount of correspondence was read re the defalcations by the late clerk from the Government Auditor and from the manager of the Auckland Accident Insurance Company, who are the guarantors for the late clork. The matter was allowed to stand over in the meantime pending the result of the trial of the late clerk at the next sessions of the Supreme Court in Auckland. Wahahoa Cemktkry.—■The Chief Surveyor wrote saving that the newly kid out cemetery at Wa-han>a encroached on a dedicated road and that it would be necessary to close the road before the ground could be gazetted as a burial ground. The number of tho section in question 1314, Town of Waharon. It was resolved to write to the Matamata Road Board asking them to take the necessary steps to close the road under " The Public Works Act, 1882.''

CfjEitK.—For the position of clerk fifteen applications were received.—Mr Mark Harrison moved, and Mr Horrell seconded, that Mr Gilchrist be appointed to the position.—The motion was carried—The following were the applicants Messrs Peter Gilchrist, T. H. Wilson, F. Pilcher, C. J. W. Barton, W. J. Tristram, C. G. Grosvenor, B. 13. Gerring, A. Bluck, John Gwynneth, H. W. Wostby, H. Buttle, A. Morrison, W. J. Burnett, W. G. Harper and W. H. Pooley.

Roll. —An application ivas received from Mr Jas. Tnrnbull to have his name placed on tho ratepayers' roll in lieu of Mr T. J. Grange as occupier of the Nottingham Castle Hotel at Morrinsville.—Granted.

Cambridge-\Vaipa Bridhe.—The Chairman reported that he had attended the court, held at Cambridge, re allocation ot the cost of repairs or reconstruction of the said bridge. Captain Jackson presided, and after hearing the evidence, he stated that he would forward a report to the Government on the matter.

Gordon Setti.bmrnt Road. — The settlers wrote offering the sum of £49 to be spent on this road if the council would subsidise the work at the rate of pound for pound—Agreed to.

Sale of Crown Lands.—The Commis?>>noi' of Taxes (Mr Crombie) wrote, stating that Messrs Richard Burke and W. Stimpson had purchased certain Crown Lands in the Wattoa Riding. OxFonii-RoroKCA Road.—ln reply to a memo, from tho Council re repairs to this road, Mr Barron wrote on behalf of the Minister for Public Works, stating that there was no money at present available for repairs, but that the matter would not be lost sight of by tho Department. This was in answer to a letter which was sent to the Government some three months ago, stating that the road was in a very had state, and that traffic was practically blocked.—The Council considered that the reply was unsatisfactory, and the clerk was instructed to again write to tho Government, urging them to do something to the road.

Shaktksbuky Road.—A letter was read from Mr ft. T\ Roche asking the Council to do some work on the above road. He would bo willing to contribute half the cost of clearing out the ro.nl drain (say £5). Mr Pavitt st.ited that the whole work would cost something about £-15.—1t was resolved that tenders U> called fur the work. After the passing of the uccounts th>- meeting adjourned until Tnesd iv'lip l<tof November.
