RAGLAN.
School Committee.—At the last meeting of the Raglan District School Committee held in the Library, July 30th, at which Messrs Rendell (Chairman), Campbell, Frissel, Bay, and Sewell were present, the report, of the Inspector (Mr Crowe), was read. It was of a very satisfactory character, as all the children who were presented for examination in the various standards had passed. The discipline, order, mode of instruction, etc., were good and the result of the examination excellent, a report which could not help being satisfactory to teachers and all concerned. The s.s. Argyle.— By one of the last trips of this steamer, there arrived here from the Wairarapa district, Mr and Mrs Vernon-Smith and family, who have come to reside upon the land Mr Smith lately purchased from Mr Stewart, situated in the Waitetuna valley near, Raglan, and adjacent to the property of Messrs Moon. Raglan Mutual Improvement Society. —This society regularly during the past winter season held meetings fortnightly for the reading of papers, discussions, etc., but this winter no meetings have as yet been held. However, an attempt has been made by a few of the
old members to arrange for a continuance of the operation of the society during the remaining winter months. Fancy Dress Ball.—A fancy dress ball is to be held in Sutton's Hall, on the 12th inst. Improvements.—Messrs Langley Bros., of this place, have very much enlarged their premises by erecting an addition to their store, thus giving them more than double room for the display of their various goods. Mr Barlow's hotel has also undergone great improvement, additional bedrooms have been built, rooms papered, the roof covered with corrugated iron, new weather-boarded etc., and the house is also to be painted. County Clerkship.— From all accounts it would seem that there is likely to be a good number of applicants for this office. Arbor Day.—This being the first Arbor Day held in this district, it naturally caused some little excitement. At any rate, the children seemed to be bent on something new, as they made their way into the school ground, Raglan, on Thursday afternoon, August 4th, for the purpose of planting some fifty trees received from the Government State nursery, Wangarei, and consisting of pines, sycamore, oak and plane trees. The proceedings commenced by Mr Rendell, chairman of the School Committee, explaining to the children and those present the object of the day's proceedings. Trees were then planted by the chairman and other members of the committee and the teacher (Mr La Trobe), and the children planted one each. Refreshments were provided for them in the school-room, which they evidently enjoyed, and sports and games were indulged in at intervals; and all seemed to be pleased with the first Arbor Day in Raglan, Bereavements.—lt is with regret that I have to record the death of Mr George McNeish, a young man, who for some time has been in a declining state of health, and who died on Thursday, the 4th inst.. at the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr McCracken, Te Mata, and was interred at the Okete cemetery on Saturday, the 6th, the Rev. Mr Williams conducting the funeral service. Intelligence was received on Friday morning last that Mrs Mitchell, the wife of Mr Thos. Mitchell J.P., of Wainui, Raglan, had died at the Auckland Hospital on the previous day. Nearly two months ago Mrs Mitchell left her home for Auck land for medical treatment, and after examination by the medical men in attendance, it was decided that an operation was necessary, which took place on Tuesday last, with the sad result of her death on the following Thursday The late Mrs Mitchell was the eldest daughter of Dr. Harsant, of Onehunga, who for many years resided in this district, and held the office of R M. here. She was a highly respected lady, and a very old resident in this district, and one who was most hospitable to the many friends who visited her home. She will be very much missed by a large circle of friends and neighbours, both in Raglan and the Waikato districts. Her remains were laid to rest in the Wesleyan Cemetery Mangere. Much sympathy is felt for her husband and daughter, her aged parents and the other members of the family and all the people of Raglan.
