CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Thk monthly meeting of tho above Council wns held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Present : His Worship the Mayor (.Mr Webtipr), Councillors Priestley, Bond, Bach, Kirkwood, and Moisley. The. minutes of the previous mectine havinti been confirmed and tho outward correspondence approved, till) c]prk proceeded to read a letter from R. B. I'itx-pat-rick, but. he was quickly stopped, the Council declining to hear anv communication fr on that individual.—Cr. Bond said . Fitzoatrick had wriiten him stating that he (Fit-it Patrick) would sooner rot than go to t'i". Hospital again to be treated bv a quack, 'l'he speaker said he presumed Dr. Kenny was referred to. HAWKBHSAVnPEDLAHS —Colonel Friwer, M.H.R., had forwarded a draft of the Bill re hawkers and pedlars.—Cr. Bach and the Town Clerk were deputed to reply to Col. Fraser. Rktorns. —The Registrar-General wrote asking for information about the Borough and its finances. One thing asked for was the number of miles of streets in the Borough, "the total extent and cost to be shown, not merely the operations of the year,"—Some of the Councillors said it was an impossibility to give the total cost, some of the streets having been made by the Militia and A. C. Force.—The returns will be sent but no one can vouch for their correctness as tho Borough accounts have not yet been audited. A Lost Ohequk.—Messrs Souter and Co. wrote tho Council that they had lost a cheque for £2 lis 2d, paid them by the Council on February 12th. They asked the Council to stop payment of it and issue them a duplicate, they undertaking to refund the amount if the original turned up.—Granted. 1 Surfaceman'.—The surfaceman applied to be taken on full time in summer and half time in winter.—The Finance committee recommended that he employed full time in winter and not at all in summer except on special occasions—such as floods— and then only if convenient to him.—Cr. 1 Kirkwood, Chairman of the Works Com--1 mittee, spoke very strongly on this question and asked what right the Finance Committee had to make any such recommendation. He thought it was a matter for the whole Cauncil to consider.—Cr. Priestley 1 said it affected the finances and that was why the Committee had made the recom--1 mendation. —Cr. Kirkwood said if the Council did not comply with tho request, ' he should not remain on the Works Committee. The surfaceman was a skilled artisan in both wood and brickwork and they were only payine him 5s per day. The man understood his work and did it without being looked after, and thereby ' saved the Works Committee much trouble, and the clerk could testify that he kept records of all material used in a satisfactory manner.—The request was unanimously granted. The Dojiain.—Tho Domain Board was | authorised to proceed with the alteration of the fences of Thornton road, aud also to ' have what gravel it required from the 1 Council's pit. —The legal question of closing Whitaker Terrace was deferred for a time. Staixion Paiiadk. —The Farmers' Club 1 wn< allowed the use, of the Government ! paddock on September 21st. to hold the Stallion Parade in, FrNAN'oiAr, Statement.— Overdraft at 1 12th July, £2lil 4s 4d ; accounts since paid, £21 lis 5d ; amount lodged during month, £20 12s 2d ; present overdraft, £2G2 3s 7d ; accounts to pass for payment, £6(5 15s lOd ; overdraft when accounts are paid, £328 19s sd. Accounts. —The following accounts were passed f>r pavment P. Thomson, £13 14s 3d ; W. Kincaid, lGs ; C. Crouch, £14 19s; .Tas- Stewart, Ss: J. Pascoe, £1 4s; W. Souter and Co., £2 4s Od ; H. Preece, £0 ; >T. Meredith, 12s; T. H. Browne, £1; R, O. Clark, £5 (isßd ; Wilsons and Ho> ton, 6s 3d ; J. S. Bond, £3 15s 8d ; F. W. Buckland, £3 7s 6:1 ; Thos. Wells, £6 Is 6d ; No. 9 Coupon, £4 4s ; J. Ferguson, lis 6d. Estimates. —The estimate of receipts and proposed expenditure for year ending March 31st, 1893, were submitted and approved. The Rate.—lt was resolved to meet on Monday, August 29th, at 7 p.m., for the purpose of making a rate of Is in the £, such rate to be payable on September 13th. Vaoancirs.—The Returning Officer was instructed to take the uecessary steps to fill the vacancies of Councillors retiring next month. Licensing Cleuk.—The _ clerk was instructed to write the Minister of Justice asking that he (the clerk) should be appointed Licensinc Clerk. Fences on the Streets.—The Clerk was instructed to write Mr Jno. Gwynneth that the Council had decided not to take any action re this matter for the present. Woiiks Committee Report.—The report of this committee stated that the much needed repairs to the foot-path near the National Hotel had been executed and a 12-inch culvert erected. It then gave a detailed account of other works that had been done during the month.—The report was adopted. Victoria-strekt. — Crs. Bach and Bond were deputed to inspect a tree opposite Mr Jatnes McFarlane's house, in this street and if they thought fit give permission to have it filled.
