H.M.S. PINAFORE.
It would be hard to find any work, musical • or literary that has ever attained such a world-wide popularity as Gilbert and Sulli--0 van's opera Pinafore, and the reason is not ° far to seek, for the British public dearly ]nves r> sailor, and never tires contemplating his love, his manly prowess and his joviality. In Pinafore we have all this and much more, indeed it would be hard to find y an entertainment which is such an epitome of dramatic art—for here we have a gallant tar. and the lass that loves him, their trials and triumph, and effective denoument—a heavy father and a villain (such a villain.) " There is a full chorus, characterised by that unanimity which is seen in choruses and no 2 where else, and the whole set in auch a mass of pretty faces, oretty dresses and pretty music as is perfectly bewildering, - No wonder Pinafore is such a draw, and n our only surprise is that our Hamilton is amateurs always famous for their dramatic performances, have not given us this opera - long ago, possibly the great cost of an adequate mounting may have frightened amateurs. However, the time has now arrived when our local amateurs feel them selves strong enough for the attempt, and certainly the management have been fortunate in securing a cist of characters of exceptional strength. No money has been " spared to mount and dress the piece as perfectly as possible, but the performers recognise that an elaborate mounting only serves to accentuate deficiencies unless the - music and acting be correct and run smoothly, and for "three months the company has been untiring in their attendance ' at almost nightly rehearsals. In another place will be found an announcement of the performance, which will take place at the Oddfellows' Hall, Hamilton East on Saturday, August 27, and Tuesday Angust 30. & —mmmtrnemm—
