The Melbourne market has weakened still further during the past fornight, milling wheat being now quoted there at 3s lid per bushel, and some considerable business on New South Wales account has lately been carried through at about this figuie. Christchdhch, July 22.—Wheat: The downward course of the English market has at length been arrested, owing to the broken weather in England, and should these conditions continue, an appreciable advance may be looked for, especially now that the quantity afloat for England and the Continent has reached normal dimensions. This turn in the market at Market Lane cannot produce any effect locally, as the value of weathered wheat is considerably higher than the relative prices of such quality in London, and sound wheat is in such limited supply that millers will require all that is available. Prices are firm for prime milling at 3s Gd to 3s Bd, slightly weathered 3s to 3s 3d, sprouted 2s Gd to 2s 9d, whole fowl wheat Is 0d to 2s 3d, all f.0.b., sucks extra. —Oats: A good business has been done in this market during the week, and prices are firm at our quotations. HA WE R A LIVE STOCK SALE. The Egmont Farmers' Union (Limited) report under date :— Hawbka, July 2S.—We have had a very quiet week as regards sales, the onlv one to record being onr stuck sale at Hitvera, which wn3 held on Wednesday, the 27th irist., and even this w*s a disappoint ing mie, for out of an entry of 220 bend i>f cattle, and nearly 1000 sheap, only 50 of former and not quite half the number of the latter came forward for sale, and this was the more annoying as we had written to several clients who were buyers of fat stock, and of course they attended the sale, but only to meet with disappointment. Wo will allow that the very wet weather and consequent bad state of the roads had a lot to answer for in the matter, but at the same time we would urge upon everyone who advertises stock for a certain sale, the great importance of bringing it in at any risk, and so sava giving , offence to would-be purchasers by breaking faith with them. Wβ are glad to say that we have managed to dispose of a good number of both cattle and sheep privately this last week. We qnote : Fat and forward bullocks, £5 15< to £6 53; two to two and a half-year-old steers, £4 10s ; cowa, in calf, £3 7* Ori t.. £3 12,-i Gd ; eighteen-montlis heifer?, £2 10s to £3 3s.
