WOMEN'S FRANCHISE,
In writing upon the proposed extension of the fiMnnhi.se to women, a contemporary hiiH the following :-We are ourselves inclined to think that the introduction of this new element will hayc a steadying effect upon politic, am!_ consequently .strengthen the constitutional cuise Mr Bnllance. as would appear from what he said in the debate on the second reading, thinks otherwise and hues the idea that women generally arc socialistic*!ly inclined. He is labouring, we believe, under a grave mistake, as he will find out to his cost—he is surely preparing "a rod for his own Lack/' Sound good sense in matters essential is characteristic of the son, and they are not likely to disturb by their votes existing conditions, unless they .see their way very clearly. Women, further, will lie but little under tne influence of agitators and pothouse politicians who now control a numerous class of electors, ami they may be expected to exercise a beneficial influence by insisting on proper attention being paid to social questions which have been so persistently ignored. We conceive also that the character of the House will be improved. Men of shady antecedents will have small chiinces of success in their candidature with the new coustituences, and this in itself would be a material advantage.
