The only objector to the establishment of a protectorate over the Gilbert Group by Great Britain was the King of Butaritari Island,who said that an American cruiser would shortly visit the Island and take possession of it. No notice .was taken of this objection. The defalcations of Fogarty, the defaulting manager of tho Permanent Mutual Benefit Building Society, who is believed to bo in South America, amount to £II,BSO. They have been traced as far back as 1886. The Trades and Labour Council have voted £350 in aid of tho Broken Hill strikers. Melbourne, July 26. The Ballnrat miners have voted £500 to the Broken Hill strikers. Adelaide, July 27, The Government are prosecuting the captain and surgeon of the s.s. Oroya in connection with the smallpox outbreak. The charges against the officers of the Oroya, were dismissed on the ground that the health officer was not a medico as provided by tho Act. Hobart, July 27. Parliament was opened yesterday. The Governor's speech was of a colourless character.
