RICHAUI) Bell, a settler at Otapiri Gorge, was shot on the evening of die 25th, at 10.30 p.in. A double-barrelled gun \va-< found near Ihn .«c:t:i)6 of the murder, tho left barrel being discharged, while the right one was loaded. Bell was ehnt in the left cheek while on horseback. He walked to his home half a mile distant, and died at one o'clock. ■ Mr Bell was returning from a meeting of the Hokonui Farmers' Club on Monday night at half-pant ten, and when in the act of stooping from his horse to open a Kate he was shot in the face by some person near by. His cheek was fearfully shattered and his jaw carried away. The wounded man managed to reach home and lived for three hours, but was unable to tell who was the murderer. A donblo-barrelled gun was fo'Jnd at the scene with the left barrel discharged. Deceased, who was a quiet, inoffensive man, leaves a young wife and several children. When asked by his wife if anybody, he thought, would do it, he made a sign in the negative. An inqne.it will be held tomorrow.
