The strikers then hastily creeled forts of stool hius, and garrisoned it with a thousand men. They a.lso procured a cannon, with which fire was opened on the police, who tried to land from tho river. After a brisk fi'ijlit, the poli(;e were ultimately obliged to surrender, and wore then allow(.'d to depart. Thirty-ciirlit men were killed, but the loss was mostly on the side of the strikers, only u few policemen being included. Hundreds of strikers are still concealed ready to shoot the police if they attempt to land again. The police came into collision with the strikers at Pennsylvania, end five persons were killed and many wounded.
