ENGLISH ELECTIONS.

Evers'.ied (Rnrtoii), ' .Mr W. 11. Houldsworth (Manchester), Sir Miehaol Hieks-Boaeh (Bristol), Eight Hon. Henry Fowler (Wolvorhampton), Right Hon. C. Villiers (Wolverhampton), Sir John Luhbock (Loiidon University), Sir Joseph Weston (Bristol), Mr J. tf enniker Heatori (Cflnf'-rbury). and J. A. Pieton (Leicester). Bitter opposition continues to bo shown to Stanley's candidature. The Party papers reprint passages from "Darkest Africa," descriptive of his encounters with the natives, and the streets of Lambeth arc pltcardcd with pictures of Stanley bullying mobs of cowering negroes. Mrs Stanley has taken to the platform on behalf of hor husband, and delivers thrilling speeches. Drs. Dalle, Dalhinger, and William Arthur appeal to the Dissenters to support the Unionists. ; July 3. Sir James Whitehead, who was Lord Mayor in 1888, and who stood in.the Home Kiile interest, has been elected as successor to Mr Alexander McArthur. M.P., for Leicester. Mr Balfour. speaking at Manchester, and Mr Goschen, at Edinburgh, severely analysed Mr Gladstone's speech at Edinburgh. The former declared that if the control over Ireland preserved by tho Imperial Parliament was only to be like that exercised over the colonies it would be worthless and merely control OQ paper. Hβ 'instanced. Queensland and the Kanaka question where the Government had found interfer ence to be absolutely out of the question.
Mr Goschen also ridiculed colonial analogy, and asserted that the veto of the Crown could not; be exercised over Ireland without raising a cry for separation. The control over the colonies themselves was of a veryshadowy kind.
Mr Burt has been returned unopposed. The Parnellites of Limerick assaulted Mr W. O'Brien. The police had to rescue him, and escorted him to his hotel.
