CAMBRIDGE CHEESE FACTORY.
IMPORTANT MEETING OP THB MILKSUPI'LIERS. In* our advertising columns will be fnund an announcement that a meeting of the milk-supplipw to the Cambridge Cheese Factory will be held at 7 P.m. this evening, in Mr Wells' chambers, Duke-street, Cambridge. Tho meeting is called by Messrs Reynolds and Co., the manufacturers of tho celebrated "Anchor Brand" butter, am! the husino-s will b>3 the consideration nf that firm t iking nvitr the cheese factory and converting it into a butter factory. We understand that Messrs Reynolds and C". have been oll'ernd a lease of the fact.iry nuon certain terms by tho owners; but tlioy do not wish t) take any advantage of thn association who have Htely been working- the factory, and who have turned not au article that has established a reputation that has placed Cambridge factory cheese in the front rank of liny that is manufactured in the colony. The members of the association will doubtless bo present at the meeting and give their viows upon the smliject, but as we know from pastexperienco that carrying on the business of cheeseuiakine has, to a large extent, been a work of philanthropy with them, wa expect they will relinquish it in favour of Messrs Reynolds and Co. It certaiuly seems a pity that any industry should collapse just when it has attained such a pitch of perfection as that gained by the Cambridge Cheese Factory; but, on tiie ether hand, if it is not returning a fair profit to the proprietors it is not to he expected that they will continue to work the factory for the benefit of their neighbours, and no one cap blame thotn if they retire from the business. Fanners are naturally anxio.is to got the highest price obtainable for their milk, and in Waikato tho proprietors of butter factories can out-bid tho cheesemakers—independently of the return of skim milk ; consequently, cheese factories are sun; to wane when in the neighbourhood of butter factories. We believe some of the farmers adjacent to the Cambridge factory take their milk to Messrs Reynolds' f-ctory at Pi-.Uerimu (a distance of quite three miles), which they certainly would not do without substantial remuneration. Wo hope the wholo of the suppliers to the Cambridge factory will be present at tonight's meeting, and that thay may arrive at u d'-cisiou that will be for their own goud and also for the good of the district generally.
