WHATAWHAIA.
Raglan Road. —The most stirrinp event uf late has undoubtedly been the stoppage uf the R.-iplau ivad, by Mr Robert Bruce. This road has now been practically closed for some days, and there is no siprn of any change in the position of affairs. It would almost appear as if the Raglan County Council will yet require t■> open the road through the slow process of the Public Works Act. So far as 1 can learn, Mr Bruce has not been treated quite fairly. Whim negotiations wore conducted with the Radian County Council, the amount or. compensation some tllOwas agreed upon. Jlut this was for a specified, place, where the new road cut through about live acres of Mr truce's laud. But when the deed came for signature, Mr liruee discovered that anodic- piece was also to be taken oif. Tills wai not re-quiied so far as the tratiic on the main road is concerned, but: was to r-rtifv a mistake, made some time ago tiv the surveyor, when laying oil' Mes-rs Cntinm and Cannell's laiid. 'J'liis en or, his. m a sense, pushed the road into Mr Bruce's hud, and if allowed, would ru piire that gent.'cman to .-hift his fence further back. I understand that this is the sole causa of the present difficulty, and it seems extraordinary that such a mistake should have been made. Failing any satisfactory arrangement, Mr Bruce is taking steps to have his land all fenced in, and this will probably add to the cost of re o.oemup the r»ad. It is to be reprett-d that _atiy stoppage has occurred, and in my '■( 'oo oM Raglan settlers will probably thin!; that the opening of their main highway was surrounded with quite en,ugh natural mlli. eulties, without having them added to by others that are cerninly avmd.iUe.
