AUCKLAND NOTES.
[krom our own coiirespondent.l TjNIYKItSAr. regret is felt among the Auckland friends of Dr. Murch at his sudden demise, and general sympathy is expressed for his widow in her sad bereavement. The news of the victory of the Waikato football team in the recent contest against Waipa was received in town with satisfaction. The result was anticipated on account of tan men from the bluntly Club having been selected to play for the Waikato County. You cannot beat the maroons much for good combined play. In face of the Citv School Committee having exonerated Mr E. C. M. Harrison uf the Beresford-street school, and in spits of a petition in that gentleman's favour having been signed by 275 parents and guardians, representing 053 children attending his school, Mr Muir, at the meefc- ( ing of the Education Board held on Friday afternoon last, actually moved chat Mr Harrison be dismissed. After that, Mr Muir surely cannot pose as the 'teachers friend. 1 It won't gee, however. I see by your paper there are several meets of the hounds advertised. There are a variety of meats—butcher's meat, horseflesh, cat's meat, and poodle's carcase. The last two ar,-) the most relished by the Palniranga Hunt Club's dogs. Wlibii they meet for sport they prefer it to either fox or hare—it is supposed on account of it being more tender and juicy, genuine ' home-fed.' you know. I expect the Waikato hounds don't show such a depraved taste ; better brought up (under the whip), Mr Editor, and more obedient to the huntsman's call. Eh ! , L I paid a visit to YVirlh s big circus last, night, with the result that I could fill a couple of columns of your newspaper were I to describe iu detail every pleasing feature that was exhibited. Master Carl's clever feat of throwing a somersault on horseback —his horse going at full speed—is a wonder in itself. Then there are acrobatic performances, trained ponies that seem almost as intelligent as human beings, and a hurdle-jumping pig, which causes much merriment by its clever leaping and tricks. It is a toss up whether Tommy (the pig s trainer) or the pig itself causes most laughter. The invisible double wire-walk-ing by Babies Gerty and May caused quite a sensation, their performance being really clever. The equestrian feats were M exceedingly plucky and attractive. Professor Kneebone, the best all-round athlete in Australasia, astonished the audience with his marvellous manipulations of heavy weights and other astounding exhibitions of strength, combined with agility. Mr G. Wirth's clever driving— ten horses at a time —was greatly appreciated. The Roman pyramids and statuary by members of the company was excellent. Clowns (black and white) and the ever-popular Dummy kept the pavilion in roars of laughter with their funny jokes and pranks. Country cousins will have to come to Auckland to see the fun. as the Wirth Bros, cannot travel the country districts with such a large show. The Messrs Wirth Bros, and their energetic manager, Mr Alexander, are to be congratulated for their enterprise in bringing such a monster circus in New Zealand with a variety of clever performers, who nightly attract a crowd that must ensure them a successful season.
