THE UNEMPLOYED IN SYDNEY.
The Sydney Daily Telegraph in a recent issue says :—As the public become aware of the acute distress existing among several hundreds of unemployed men, donations of money, clothing, uiul food are being received in large numbers by the committee in charge. Yesterday sufficient was subscribed to provide food for a litrjre number of married men and th'Jr families, besides several hundreds of single men. No less than 600 men assembled outsido Brown's stables at 10 o'clock last evening, and they were admitted in bodies of a dozen at a time in order that each person " upon entering might ho supplied with a cup of soup. Tho whole of the men had , retired by 10.30 to thuir uncomfortable j quarters on the floors of the stables. The ( men. however, did not appear to be at all j inconvenienced by the bare boards with- j out covering, but were grateful that they ] had not to retire as formerly on the wet ; grass of the parts and Domain or on pome ( doorstep. The committee are to be con- , gratulated upon their ardent endeavours , to make the men as comfortable e.s possible ] iu the etables.aud aro anxiously awaiting i the arrival of Monday, when the men will be accommodated in the Exhibition Building. If the men were compelled to oc- i cupy their pretout abode for long, disease t would certainly break out amongst < them. The men, most of whom are walk- J injr about in search of employment duriuir the day, are at present compelled to sleep ! in the same clothes without tho oppor- i tunity even of bathing. In addition to this, the stables aro by no means henlthly, for they have not been denned since they \ were occupied by horsi.'S. Efforts are , beiuir made to form a citizens' committee t as soon as possible, and this body will pro- , bably take charge of aftnirs on Monday. ]
