PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The above body mat at Morrinsville on Tuesday at lhi.m. Present: Messrs W. V. Chepmell (chairman), A. Heanoy, W. |[. Herries, D. McXicol, J. S. Browne, M. H'irrisnii, N. I. Hunt, and H. Horrell. Tiio.il['son's Thack.—A deputation from the Ta'iranga County Council (Councillors Pratt (eliairmari), smil Killen) waited upon the Council re the widening of Thompson's tr.ick, so a-. , , tn make il lit tor ;i coach road. Mr Pratt said he iinrl Mr Killen had been deputed to wait upon tlm Pi.-iko Council, in order to yet tin) CoutH; to petition the Government to convert Thompson's track int.) ucoao'h i-.«d. }fn |j'>ii;t>d out that a Urge quantity of stock passed along the track, and sonio of it w.is geneividy lost by accident, and if it mi' nuuie a coach r.iad, stock coulrl then ttavol safely. Waiknto iind Pinko were dairy counties, but Taurang:\ was not, atvi ths f.-irmei-s of ihiit comity could ilo with any amount of handfed youngsters and if the trick were widened they would Iw large buyt-r-i in the bufore mentioned conntius. Thoro .voul'l also bo a large otiasiinger traffic as the rnad would connect Tauranga with the r.iilway at Tβ Arolm ; indeed tourists would probably ?,o that way, as the steumer service was very irrezular. .Ho thought if the I'iiiko and Tauraiißu Countv Councils, tlio Te Arolm Town ]soar.J, ami the Tauranga Borough Council all p"titioned the (..'overnment, it would probably carry out the prop'wod alteration. He had already interviewed the T,i Aroha Town lioard, and the members of it were thoroughly in accord with tha and wiv.rd forwarJ a petition wh.'ii tho Jfoiisn infil. Th« cnst of widuninir the track would not exceed £'3000, for lie lui':w a contractor who would undertake the work For that sum. If the loiial bodies above referred to took up tlm work Jioarlily, and brought pressure t<; bear upon the Government, he felt sura the work Would he done, and lie would lviiilnd thoin that any liepresenl itivc.n to the llouso or any inrmbers of the (!ovcrnnient that liappenod to coinn this way, ■ should be luai"! ( > support the applicati'in.—Mr Killen also spoke in favour of lh« api.lir.it ion hi '.d.>, and did not doubt but that the Gnvi:rmii'Mit woulil rxeouti' tho wi rk if th« loc il hi,dies interestod worn unanimous. A contractor would undertake the work for l"3000, so if tenders were called for the work it would probably be done for lea?. The Tauranpa puofylo hiid no coiniriiinicatiun whatever with tho railway, and this road would act as a considerable feeder by bringing passengers to To .Aroha. Tho amount of stock travelling between Ta-uraiigu and Piako and Waikato Counties was large. During tho past month as many as -1000 sheep had passed over tho track, and tho loss had been considerable. This would be remedied if the alteration were made.—Considerable discussion ensued, and it was eventually resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. Hunt, to comply with the application. —A H2ti f .ion will be forwarded by the time the Houso mofts. —The deputation thanked the Council and then withdrew.
