FOOTBALL.

« THE first Waipa-Waikato county match was played at Hamilton on Saturday, and resulted in a win for Waikato by 18 points to 5. Considering that this was the fir.-t match of the season in which some of the players had played, many little mistakes can be excused. Tho teams were fairly well matched, but Waikato was always a bit the best. The match, which was to have started at 3 p.m., was much delayed, owing to some members of the Waipa team not rolling up, and not sending word of their intention of not coming. We hope this will not occur again. The game was played in the proper spirit throughout, and the county matches should go along way towards putting the footballers of Waikato and WaiDa—amongst whom considerable rivalry exists—upon a more friendly footing. The following composed the teams :— Waikato (maroon) : Foil-back, E. Johnson. Three-quarters : L. Bull, L Harris (captain), T. Connolly. Halves :J. B. Hani-, W. Hammond, .J. Clarkin. Forwards : J. Montgomery, A. Peacock, J. Attrill, C. Smith, E. Williamson, F. Carter, T. Frost, J. Gillett. Waipa (blue) : Full-back, F. Ku Kutai. Three-quarters : E. Walker. A. Knsabs, W. Goble. Halves : J. 11. Hume, J. Osborne, F. Bowden (captain). Forwards : G. Mayes, J. Rvburn, F. B. Jolly.'R. Harrison, W. G. Macky, 1). L. Smart. W. Moore, _W. R. C. Walker. Tho Waikato captain won the toss, and choose the northern goal with the sun at their backs. Walker kicked oil' for Waipa,, the ball going out of touch at the 25 flag. From the throw-in, the ball was secured by Clarkin, who ran and passed to ,]. Harris, who punted out of bounds. The maroons now gradually worked the ball into the Waipa 2-5, where E, Walker secure:! possession of the ball and made a grand run to the half-way flasr, but he was grassed by Connolly, and received a nasty fall, which stopped the play for a short time. The ball was kicked out of bounds, and matters went on rather evenly for a while until Waipa, bv a sweeping rush, invaded their opponents' territory, but Johnson relieved his side by puntiug out of bounds. Waikato now made a determined ra ly. their forwards, headed by Peacock and Gillett, taking the ball right over the Waipa goal line, where a force down resulted. It was now Waipa's turn to rally up, and following up Ku Kutai'.s kick-off, cook the ball into the maroons' 25, but a quick response from Conuolly and Harris brought play to halfway. Here scrums took place, until Gillett secured the ball and dashed across the line, securing the first try. L. Hrrris took the kick but failed to convert. The superior combination of the Waikato forwards now began to show, and from another good rush, Gillett again scored, but the kick at goal was again a failure. From the kick out Harris secured possession of the ball and by some good passes took the ball well up the field, when Carter getting across the line scored the third try. No goal resulted, Connolly shortly after this scored the fourth try for Waikato but the kick was again a failure. Time was called shortly after the score standing Waikato 8, Waipa, nil. Peacock kicked off for Waikato, but the ball was ordered back to half-way where a scrum was formed. The Waikato forwards again showed up well, Frost and Gillett being to advantage. Mayes secured a mark, and kicked out of bounds. From the throw in loose play resulted, Waikato always having the best of it T. Connolly scored shortly after, but the kick at goal was a failure. Four tries were then scored by Waikato in quick succession by Carter (2) L. Harris (2), but no goals were kicked. Just before time Waipa rallied and in a good rush of the forwards Jolly crossed the line and secured the only try titt Waipa, which Goble converted into a good goal. Time was called immediately after. It would be hard to single out the best players on either side, tut the following showed up well for tho victors:—Montgomery, Johnson, Harris (2), Bull, Connolly, Hammond, Peacock, Gillett and Frost, and on the defeated side Hume, Walker, Smart, Macky, Goble, Harrison, Ryhurn, Jolly, and Osborne. Messrs W. Odium and H. MclC-nzie umpired for Waipa and Waikato respectively, while Mr R. J. Gwynne filled the position of referee, and all gave general satisfaction.
