WAIPA ATHLETIC CLUB.
♦ FIRBT 3POKTS MEETING. Thk first meeting of the Waipa Club eventuated here on Her Majesty's birthday, on the township reserve. There were some three hundred persons present, visitors fmm the surrounding districts forming the majority, but few natives were present, as at most of our sport meetings, this maybe accounted for by there being no horse racing and their being debarred from competing in the sports, none at present of tlie native race having joined the Club. No doubt this once explained to them the Club will, at their next meeting be considerably augumented in number, and the Maoris fciko their fair share of the trophies. All the events, were run of! up to the time mimed and were well contested, and the hanclicappers, Messrs Chipuell und McFiu-lane, were fairly successful, considering this, was the first meeting of the Club. "Jimmy" was again successful, beating his brother with a splendid spurt a few yards from the post. The trophies will be manufactured by the well-known jeweller, Mr H. Howden, of Hamilton, and presented to the winners at an entertainment to be given here under the auspices of the Waipa Amateur Club, on the 20th June, the anniversary of the settlement of Alexandra. CONCERT. The concert in the evening was only moderately attended, but the performance was a most excellent one. Mrs Helps accompanied, and played various operatic selections in her well-known artistic style. Miss Bowden's song, "The Blind Girl to Her Harp," was exquisitely sung, and applauded. The duet " I Heard a Voice," by Misees Allen and Aubin was exceedingly well rendered, and applauded. Mr E. Aubin's song, " The Place Where the Old Horse Died," was also a great success. Miss Frida Bowden's song, " Somebody," fairly brought down the house, and had to he repeated. The tableau " Lord Melin's Town," was excellently put on the stage. Mr Miles, who, by request sang " Far Far Away," in character, fairly carried the audience with him ; Mr Miles as a seriocomic vocalist is unrivalled in this district, of course he was encored. Miss Allan's song " Beside Me," was of course successful, as all this young la-iy's songs are. Mr and Miss F. Bowden's duet, " Money Matters," was well sung and encored, Miss Aubin's character song, "The Merry Zingara," was a great success, it was charmingly sung, and received an encore. The tableau "The Moorish Maiden," finished the programme. The usual dance concluded the entertainment.
