SHAMEFUL TREATMENT OF MEN. (BV TKLBQRAPH.— PItKSS ASSOCIATION). Gishoiink, Last Night. In response to a statement that labour was scarce here the labour bureau sent a man to investigate. After staying a few days he left, and the bureau seut from Auckland and Wellington 23 men. These men landed penniless, without provision being made for them. They were without food from Friday till Saturday at noon, when they intimated their condition to Sergt.-Major Moore who provided them with a meal and wired to the buteau for instructions. During the day he received instructions to provide for them till Monday. On Monday eight of the men found employment and the rest after tramping the country returned to town last night hungry and worn out, having been unable to get work. The men state that they have heen grisly derived by the department who told them they would be provided with work, tents and tools on arrival here, also that a scale of pay had been arranged, but no such provision had been made. Sydney, May 25. The Government has decided to grant individual relief in special cases among the destitute and unemployed.
