LAWN TENNIS.

Ax the Hamilton Lawn Tennis Club'd courts, on Saturday afternoon, the final round in the gentlemen's championship was played between Messrs W. N. von Sturmer and J. G. Palairet. The game, as was expected, was an exciting one from the start, and was witnessed with great interest by a number of the club members. In the first set, which was won by Mr Palairet by o" to 4, the games were one all, two all, three all, four all, when Mr Palairet won the next two, as above. The second set was opened by this gentleman winning the first two games, the third falling to Mr von Sturmer. Mr Palairet then won three more, and Mr yon Sturmer won the seventh, and Mr Palairet the eighth, the set ending, Mr Palairet G, and Mr von Sturmer 2, the totals being 12 to G. The match was now looked upon as a moral for the former gentleman, as his opponent required to win a love set to tie. With a big up-hill fight, Mr von Sturmer made a good start, and wan the first twn games in the third set, but the third fell t« Mr Palairet, and with it won the club championship for this year, the scores being: Mr Palairet, 21; Mr von Sturmer, 8. The players wero greeted with applause, the match being the best that has been seen in Hamilton fir many seasons. Both played a careful game, displaying cautiou rather than brilliancy, but the rallies were often long sustained, and evoked considerable applause from the on-lonkers. Mr Palairet was subsequently presented with the handsome silver cup—a present from MrS. McLernon prior to his leaving Hamilton —by Mrs James Hume, who made a few well-chosen remark?, to which the recipient suitably responded. Afternoon tea was provided at the courts by the lady members of the club, a considerable number of whom were present in the club colours.
