DEEMING'S EXECUTION
THE CLOSING SCENE. HE PEESISTS IN HIS INNOCENCK. (by electric telegkafh.— copyright). Melbourne, May 23. Tin-: Bishop of Molbourno visited Dooming yesterday at the lattor's request. The convict expressed contrition and stated (hat lie would not make a speech on the gallows, but die protesting his innocence Deeming was hanged at 10 o'clock, death teing instantaneous. He made no statement but merely said, ''Lord, receive my Suul." There were about one hundred persons piesent at Deeming's execution including the leading doctors, University professors, and representatives of tho English, Australian, and New Zealand Press. At a few minutes to ten the Deputy-Governor of the gaol entered accompanied by the executioner and proceeded to the convict'e cell. After prayer by tho chaplain, Deeming was pinioned and punctually at 10 o'clock he walked to the scaffold. He was slightly nervous and twitched his head while the noose was being adjusted. In reply to whether he had anything to say, Deeming merely replied, " Lord receive my soul." Hia face was pale but otherwise he seemed calm. After the drop fell there was not the slightest movement in the body. Deeming left a statement with the Governor of the gaol, but it is not believed to contain anything new. Up to early this morning he continued to protest his innocence of the Eainhill murders.
