CAMBRIDGE CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW.
The above show was well patronised on Saturday, and tho committee may be ciugratnl ited upon the successful issue of this their first effort. The gross amount received during the two days is a trifle over £30, so there will probably bo a small credit l-.al-.nce after all expenses have been defrayed. This is v.>ry encouraging, as there r were no funds to fall back upon had the . show proved a failure, the whole of the yearly subscriptions going tj the paivnt ' society in Auckland. This may appear ' strange to some of our readers, but it is j really a very good investment, for the sub- 1 scription of os entitles the subscriber to five good chrysanthemum plants—a long list being supplied to choose from—and free admission to tho Auckland and Cambridge shows; a ticket is also supplied which admits one of the member's family, but this ticket only admits one individual once, and must be given up at the door of whichever show is attended ; the member's pass is, of course, available at both shows as often as required. There will bo a large influx of members to the Cambridge branch this year, for a show having been held in the town ha< awakened many to the fact that it is cheaper to become a membor than to pay for admission, independent of the five plants which are given. Then, again, many were charmed with the great variety of beautifnl flowers, and intend, next year, pnlisting in the ranks of the exhibitors. As we have before remarked, this year's show was much too lata ; nevertheless many of the blooms were very good, and a credit to tho exhibitors. In addition to thoso who exhibited in the ordinary classes, a large number of blooms were staged, but not for competition. Mr T. Whiteley, of Otahuhu, and Messrs D. Hay and Son, of Auckland, sent a number of beautiful specimens ; the latter also staged two dozen beautiful spnei mens of gladioli, find we fancy thou* representative booked a fair number of orders for bulbs. Mrs Martyu, of Hautapu, exhibited blooms of pr itea, mellifera and bougainvillea glabra that were greatly admired ; a pomegranate fruit that had been crown in Dulce-street, Cambtidge, was also exhibited. Mr J. Br nvn, Rardener to \V. Thorn* m, Esq.,of Maungakawa, staged a monster pyramid of fiowew that also drew considerable a'.tention. The National Chrysanthemum Society's medals, presented by W. Thornton, Esq., were well distributed, the silver one's going to Messrs Hay and Son, and Mr T. Wells; and the bronze otic fell to Mr M. McDorinott. Mi' T. Wells won the Society's certificate by having secured the greatest number of prizes. The promenade concerts iveM fairly successful, the vocalists being Miss Chambers and Messrs Hookey and Hunter. Mr Burn-Murdoch played several flute solos, and a scratch orchestra supplied the balance. On Friday the Cambridge Band enlivened the town with several selections played outnde (lie Hall, and wo must congratulate the performers upon having added to their repertoire, for some of the old tunes have become rather threadbare. The afternoon tea on Friday was supplied by Mesdanies R. Chambers, E. B. Walker and T. Hartly; and on Saturday by Mesdatnes Jno. Martyn, J. H. Paton and J. R. S. Richardson. By tha exertions of these ladies about £3 5s was added to the funds of the Society. The children's section was ono of the be»t features of the show, many of their bouquets being beautifully made, and on tho whole very much superior to what we expected to have seen. Many of the childsen's bouquets would have certainly held their own with those exhibited by adults, and in several iiist xnces we believe would have surpassed them. The Te Awamutu and To Aroha districts were not represented, but the secretary, Mr I<. J. Brooks, received several letters from teachers in those districts stating their children could not compete as they had no means of forivaiding their exhibits; but they hoped in tho future that tho train arrangements would be more favourable when their .scholars would be only too glad to compete. The following is a list of the awards in the children's class :— Cajidridob District. —Table bouquet (seniors): Effie Willis, 1 ; Percy Hester, 2; Jno. McFarlane, 3. Juniors : Jessie Brooks, 1. The parents and friends of the children attending the various schools, in many instances, provided special prizes for those who had not been successful in gaining the prizes offered by the Society, but whose exhibits were deemed worthy of a reward by the judges. Hamilton Public Schools.—The exhibits from these schools were extremely good, and as no special prizes had been provided bv the district, tho judges (Medames Hill, Watts and Wilson) each made a donation, which the society subsidised, in order to encourage those who had been unable to gain a "district prize. The following were the awards :—Philip Munro, Leslie Hay, Annie Del icar, John Taylor, Wm. Munro, Annie Grillett and Annie Delaney. „ . , Hautapu Public School. — Special prizes werp. offered to the children attending this school for wreaths, the awards beTng : Rosy Forrest, 1; Grace Jborrast, 2 ; Pollie Peppercorn, 3. The schools at a distance labour under a great disadvantage in having to pack up the bouquets in boxes, but that it ca.n be overcome was amply demonstrated by tho3e received from Ngaruawalua. They wero beautifully packed, aud arrived perfectly fresh and clean. The Show Committee were so pleased with the trouble taken to forward these bouquets that they intend returning the case in which they were forwarded, and, if possible (for the blooms are now scarce), enclosing a few specimen blooms to show the good people of Ngarnawahia what can be done by cultivation with chrysanthemums.
