ZEALANDA.
Land 'midst the seas—hail be to thee ! A gom not called in vain, Adopted home of none but free Stonghold of southern main. Once peopled by a race tu us Thought savage at the time Of our ancestors conquest Now in the strongest's train They savage were, but now, enlit, Take our aims to heart, Some rather slow, some with more wit Keep, otherwise friends, apart They learned not truth and kindness 'lone, To forget and be forgiven, But teachings too, 'gainst which day's gone The best had sadly Rlrivcn Still days will come, as days did go For ages since creation, When, where the shadow darkest lay, Rose the blessing of the nation. You laugh at my predicament, But, may be, you cannot see it, As Land and Income-Taxes went, The Maoris did not need it. Not need it! No ! How could a tax Be levied on their forests Or pumice plains or tidal flats Ne'er visited e'en by tourists. The tax was struck in, " prospectu,"' Of what might be made of it, But then, just wait a bit, in lieu, There may be a deficit. In what? In Revenue? That would be rather awkward As Treasury Bills would have to do, And that is walking backward. But then, as long as there are sprats To bite on bread and honey, Why should we quit and doff our hat.s To the men what hold the money, And ask us to subsist on what Both head and hatids may give, When now, it's neither of the two, And he who takes does live. Live, yes, a while may be Till you shall be corrected :. So many a cres do go free, From so many is collected. Each one now hopes that his be ease— The others only basted ; _ But large or small, see if his fleece To it's utmost won't be tested. Some medicine in draughts you get, Some in mixture, powder or pill; Each form becomes some doctur's pet, Leaves it nauseating still. So our new impost is but The drug in another form, And if you lice in house or hut, Expect you will be shorn. Then whac'-i now your Liberal You will call the worst of mockers, And wi<h the party, fads and all, To Davy Jones' locker. KOKORin/ANGA. Waikato.
