MR HENRY REYNOLDS ON "NEW ZEALAND."
Spbakixg at a meeting at Sunnyside road the other evening, says the Islington Gazette, Mr Henry Reynolds, a most enterprising colonist, of the firm of Reynolds and (Jo., said :—At the request of Dr. Duncan I am to give you s.ime idea of the wonderful productions and capabilities of my adopted couutry, New Zealand. At Brighton there is living a gentleman (Mr George Graham, whose family are old friends of mine) who, a little over fifty years ago, superintended the hoisting of the British flag at Auckland. He told me that one of the first sights that greeted him on landing was a large supply of human arms and legs ready for cooking. To-day we send out some of the finest mutton in the world, and last year beef and mutton equal to 2,000,000 sheep were exported. We have uow fifteen and a-half millions of sheep, also 157,000 horses and 553,000 cattle. The country is teeming with agricultural produce of all kinds, but we must have an outside market, as our own population is so sm ill. If you wish to be really patriotic, and to help your own young colonies, insist upon having real New Zealand mutton. I recently purchased 50 tons of hooey from two men, who, though not farming on a large scale, have given their attention to bee culture. Dr. Duncan has very kindly invited me to furnish samples of some of our goods, so that those who are interested in the subject may taste and judge for themselves, that any prejudice which may hitherto have existed against what is here called foreign produce must iu the case of New Zealand be set aside, and everything judged upon its merits. The thanks of all New Zealanders are due to those who have helped us to find a market for our surplus products, and to bring the British consumer into direct contact with the New Zealand producer.
